Saturday’s Golden Rose fancy Astern is one of 128 three-year-olds among the Caulfield Guineas 2016 first acceptances taken by Racing Victoria (RV) for the October classic this week.

RV closed first declarations for four Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Group 1s on Tuesday including those for the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) run over the Caulfield mile on October 8.
In Sydney this Saturday the gun three-year-olds of the season have an early showdown in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), and one of the best in betting for it and the Caulfield Guineas next month is Astern.
The Godolphin-raced galloper is one of 12 Caulfield Guineas first acceptances for trainer John O’Shea and the son of Medaglia D’Oro was last seen winning the Group 2 The Run To The Rose (1200m) ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 in Sydney.
Astern is at $17 in early Caulfield Guineas betting, the post-first acceptances odds at Ladbrokes.com.au led by fellow Golden Rose hopeful Divine Prophet ($7.50) for Team Hawkes.
O’Shea’s other Caulfield Guineas entries include his second Rose hope Impending and the consistent Trenchant.
Hawkes Racing meanwhile have accepted for Choisir colt Divine Prophet in the Golden Rose and in first acceptances for the Guineas on the back of his first-up Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) win at Randwick on August 20.
The team also have eight other Caulfield Guineas hopes still in the mix including undefeated Redoute’s Choice colt Swear who won the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) last weekend in the wet.
Sydney’s No. 1 trainer Chris Waller won last year’s Caulfield Guineas with Press Statement (2015) and is back in 2016 with 12 first acceptors including star filly Omei Sword.
She is favourite in Golden Rose betting for Saturday and is also a first acceptor for the fillies’ only $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on Caulfield Guineas Day as well as the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 22.
Omei Sword is the only filly still entered for the Caulfield Guineas this season and is being kept safe in futures betting at $13 to beat home the boys in the classic.
Other highly favoured three-year-olds in the Caulfield Guineas markets paid up for in the first round of acceptances include the Tony Pike-trained Kiwi Sacred Elixir ($9) who was last seen winning Brisbane’s Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) on June 11 and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained undefeated More Than Ready colt Evacuation ($10).
Waterhouse is yet to prepare a Caulfield Guineas winner and has a total of four chances this season including also El Divino who lines-up in Sydney’s Golden Rose after a fourth in the Run To The Rose.
Among the most notable non-acceptors out of Caulfield Guineas contention include Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, the fellow Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Vain Stakes winner Russian Revolution and Run To The Rose runner-up Star Turn.
The 2016 Caulfield Guineas second acceptances are open until September 20.
