As the first of the major Group 1 races held during the annual Melbourne Cup Carnival the Victoria Derby tips are some of the most sought after of the spring.
Each season the Group 1 $2 million Victoria Derby (2500m) attracts a field of the best current three-year-old stayers and the race runs at Flemington Racecourse on the Saturday before Melbourne Cup Day on the first Tuesday of November.
As soon as the Victoria Derby field is released on the Tuesday before race day, punters are chasing the Victoria Derby tips.
2024 Victoria Derby Tips
The 2024 Victoria Derby tips will be published right here as soon as the final field and betting markets from Ladbrokes.com.au are released the week of the race.

To Win: #2 Red Aces ($7 at time of publish)
Great clash expected in the Derby but tipping the Moonee Valley Vase form from last weekend on Cox Plate Day to stack-up.
Punters have to go back to Efficient in 2006 to find the last horse to do the Vase – Derby double, but this talented Nick Ryan-trained Dundeel colt looks set to be the next.
He is bred to stay the Derby distance and was impressive over 2040m to return to winning form in the Vase.
Red Aces came from midfield and made-up ground there which are encouraging signs as he prepares to step up in distance and grade.
A win and a second from his two previous Flemington starts prove he likes the track, and he is drawn to get a sweet run from barrier four with Jamie Mott retaining the ride.
Think the quick back-up will suit and he’ll stay all day.
Can win.
The Danger: #1 El Castello ($4.20 at time of publish)
You cannot bet on the VRC Derby this year and leave the deserving favourite El Castello out even after his horror outside barrier draw.
Barrier 18 is the only reason I don’t have this class horse on top.
He is going great guns winning his last four straight and is showing no signs of slowing down.
The 2500m is the query for them all but the way that Cummings’ Castelvecchio colt hit the line in winning Sydney’s Group 1 Spring Champion over 2000m last Saturday gives positive indications he’ll run out the Derby distance.
He needs to get the right luck early and the right ride by Josh Parr, not using too much early.
Was on speed last weekend so hoping he doesn’t exert himself trying to cross and leave nothing in the tank for the closing stages.
Will he like Flemington and the Melbourne way? That’s the other question but if he’s good enough he’ll win.
Deserving favourite just needs the favours in the run.
The Roughie: #6 Kingofwallstreet ($15 at time of publish)
There’s a host of double-figure outsiders in this year’s Derby markets that tick a number of boxes for an upset without shocking.
Kingofwallstreet is one at $15 at time of publish that is doing plenty right ahead of his big test on Saturday.
The Matt Cumani-trained galloper is another son of Dundeel who looks like the 2500m distance will be to his liking.
Comes in with confidence having broking his maiden status at start number three last time out in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) on Caulfield Cup Day.
Polanski (2013) was the last to do the Caulfield Classic / VRC Derby double and a midfield draw giving options puts this guy in line to potentially be the next.
Michael Dee continues associations, he’s got that Group 3 win on the CV now and might just take it to the next level here.

Race comments
The G1 Victoria Derby. It looks an open race. EL CASTELLO (1) comes here on the quick backup having won the G1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick last week. He's given no indication he won't run a strong 2500m, he just needs a good ride early from the draw. If he doesn't fire, something at big odds wouldn't shock. OXFORD BLUE (14) is one of those. He was backed off the map to win the Geelong Classic and looked to be outsprinted when racing on a slow speed. Have a feeling he'll relish a proper test, as will SCARY (13). He ran on strongly over 1800m here in the Super Impose two back before copping a farcical tempo in the Caulfield Classic. Happy to forgive that. KEENELAND (3) won the Super Impose nicely before a narrow defeat at Caulfield. No knocks. RED ACES (2) got the job done last week at Moonee Valley and should appreciate the trip on the quick backup.
Victoria Derby Favourite
Many Victoria Derby tips favour the shortest-priced three-year-old in the Victoria Derby betting markets, but backing the Victoria Derby favourite historically hasn’t been the best for punters.
From 2006 – 2024 just four of the Victoria Derby winners jumped favourite in the markets: Efficient (2006), Tarzino (2015), Ace High (2017), Hitotsu (2021) and most recently Riff Rocket ($2.20 in 2023).
In total from 1983 – 2019 just eight Victoria Derby favourites were successful.
A better Victoria Derby betting tip then is to lay the favourite and back a longer-priced runner in the Victoria Derby odds.
Plenty of double-figure outsiders have been successful in the race including Manzoice ($21 in 2022), Johnny Get Angry ($21 in 2020), Prized Icon ($17 in 2016), Fiveandahalfstar ($41 in 2012), Sangster ($13 in 2011), Lion Tamer ($13 in 2010) and even triple-figure roughie Rebel Raider ($101 in 2007) so don’t be afraid to include a longer-priced three-year-old in your 2024 Victoria Derby Tips.
Victoria Derby Lead-Up Races
When it comes to Victoria Derby tips one of the key things to consider is the lead-up races and runs of the youngsters in the field.
Checking out the full Victoria Derby form guide provided at an online bookmaker like Ladbrokes.com.au or right here at Races.com.au is a top Victoria Derby tip as it can uncover real value in the markets.
Traditionally the key Victoria Derby lead-up race is the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) run the Saturday before on Cox Plate Day. The last Victoria Derby winner to come off a run in the MV Vase was Johnny Get Angry (3rd in 2020), while the last to complete the double was Efficient (2008).
The other standout Victoria Derby lead-up race is the Norman Robinson Stakes – now known as the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) and run on Caulfield Cup Day a fortnight before VRC Derby Day.
Polanski (2013) was the last horse to complete the Caulfield Classic – Victoria Derby double, while in 2019 the Victoria Derby winner Warning improved on a lead-up second in the Caulfield Classic from Caulfield Cup Day.
Riff Rocket (2nd in 2023) was the last Victoria Derby winner to come via a lead-up run in the Caulfield Classic.
