Held at Caulfield Racecourse in late August or early September, the Group 1 Memsie Stakes 2024 is a weight-for-age race which currently offers $750,000 in prize money. The 1400m event is held as the first Group 1 of the new racing season and is a great lead up race to the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) run a fortnight later over the mile at Flemington. Dissident (2014) followed by Mr Brightside (2023) nearly a decade later are the latest horses to complete the Memsie Stakes – Makybe Diva Stakes double.
Raced on the same day as the Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m), the Group 3 The Heath 1100 Stakes (1100m) and the Group 3 W.W. Cockram Stakes (1200m), the Memsie Stakes has produced some outstanding Cox Plate winners including El Segundo (2006), Makybe Diva (2005), Sunline (2001-01), and Dane Ripper (1998).
The Memsie Stakes is now the first Group 1 race of the racing year after it was elevated from Group 2 status for the 2013/2014 season.
The form out of the 2021 Memsie Stakes was franked with the third-placed mare Tofane going on to place in a host of other Group 1 events and win the following autumn’s Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at the same track/distance.
The 2022 Memsie Stakes form was franked with the runner-up I’m Thunderstruck winning the Makybe Diva next start before a number of other Group 1 placings including a second in that year’s Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Sadly I’m Thunderstruck would go on to be euthanised in March of 2023 following arthroscopic fetlock surgery. He suffered a catastrophic knee injury whilst getting up after general anaesthetic.
In 2023 after completing the Memsie Stakes – Makybe Diva double, Mr Brightside went on to further frank the form with a host of other Group 1 placings including in the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (2nd), Cox Plate (2nd) and Cantala Stakes (2nd). He returned in the autumn of 2024 to win the CF Orr – Futurity Stakes double before a second in that year’s All-Star Mile.
Mr Brightside returned as the favourite in 2024 looking to go back-to-back but could only manage to finish a first-up second to upset winner Pinstriped ($14).
The 2024 Memsie Stakes took place at Caulfield on Saturday, August 31, 2024 as the opening Group 1 of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and was won in an impressive late upset by Pinstriped ($14).

The 2024 Memsie Stakes result saw the Enver Jusufovic-trained Pinstriped ($14) enjoy a Group 1 upset to kick off the spring carnival in Melbourne with the six-year-old given a gun ride by Ben Allen to charge home late and deny the beaten favourite, Mr Brightside ($2.50F), victory by a neck in a thriller.

2024 Memsie Stakes Tips
Stay tuned for our insider Memsie Stakes 2024 Tips on the Caulfield Group 1 this season.
- To Win: #1 Mr Brightside ($2.40 at time of publish) – BET NOW
The Memsie Stakes promises to be an explosive start to Group 1 racing in Melbourne for the spring. With only eight runners, this race is still packed with talent, including the highly anticipated rematch between Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni. The betting markets currently favour Mr Brightside for the 1400m victory, although Pride Of Jenni is a formidable opponent of course looking back on her Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes demolition job last prep. While Pride Of Jenni defeated Mr Brightside in their last encounter, that was over a longer distance and at a different stage of their campaigns. Mr Brightside is arguably a stronger performer at shorter distances and has an impressive record at Caulfield. Expect a thrilling finish as these two top-class horses battle it out for the Memsie Stakes title.
2024 Memsie Stakes Field
The Memsie Stakes field attracts a strong line-up of talented weight-for-age performers often kicking off their spring bids and eventually heading towards races like the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) later in the spring.
Good lead-up races for horses heading towards the Group 1 Memsie Stakes field include the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield in late July and the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) run a fortnight before Memsie Stakes Day.
Mr Brightside (2023) was the last horse to complete the P.B. Lawrence Stakes – Memsie Stakes double.
Pinstriped (2nd in 2024) was the last Memsie Stakes winner to come via a lead-up run in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes.
The official Memsie Stakes 2024 Final Field & Barriers will be released on Wednesday, August 38, 2024 and published in full below.
The 2024 Memsie Stakes field features a small but top-class field of eight with Mr Brightside narrow favourite to beat home historic Queen Elizabeth winning mare Pride Of Jenni when the two stars resume for the spring on Saturday.
