The BJ McLachlan Stakes is a Group 3 sprint run in Brisbane either at Eagle Farm or Doomben Racecourse over the summer in late December.

Held under set weights conditions, the BJ McLachlan Stakes is restricted to two year old runners. Horses race over 1200m seeking a share of $300,000 prize money making it one of the most lucrative Brisbane Summer Racing features.

The BJ McLachlan Stakes previously shared the program with the recently rescheduled Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes before that event moved forward a week in 2021.

The Listed Phelan Ready Stakes and Calaway Gal Stakes serve as a nice lead-up into the BJ McLachlan Stakes field. Ours To Keep (2016) followed by Alpine Edge (2020) are the latest youngsters to complete the Phelan Ready – BJ McLachlan Stakes double.

Many of the young horses use the BJ McLachlan Stakes as preparation for the Magic Millions Carnival in January at the Gold Coast Racecourse about a week later where they run in the lucrative $3 million Restricted Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m). Coolangatta (2021) was the last BJ McLachlan Stakes winner to back-up and win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (2022) next start.

The 2021 BJ McLachlan Stakes winning filly Coolangatta further franked the form with a third in the 2022 Golden Slipper Stakes results and Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) win at The Valley in the spring of 2022.

In 2020 BJ McLachlan Stakes winner Alpine Edge went on to run second in the 2021 Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

The race has been won by many nice horses during their two-year-old seasons including in 2019 by King’s Legacy who went on to win the 2020 Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes – Champagne Stakes double in Sydney.

The 2023 BJ McLachlan Stakes ran on Sunday December 23, 2023 as part of Brisbane’s summer racing program in Queensland and was won in style by the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained favourite Storm Boy ($1.45F).

  • To Win: #6 Mishani Aloha ($18 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Going for an upset in the BJ McLachlan and have the local Brisbane-trained filly from the Hendra stables of Les Ross on top. She is close to $20 at time of publish in a field with a Sydney raider at an odds-on quote, but think she is overs. Two-from-two at the distance she comes off back-to-back Doomben victories so is chasing a third win on the trot. Won her latest on December 2 on Heavy going by a good margin with 58kg. Back in weight for her Eagle Farm and Group 3 debut here and can surprise at a price.

2023 BJ McLachlan Stakes Field

The BJ McLachlan Stakes field attracts a quality line-up of promising young two-year-old summer sprinters and has a capacity of 16 starters.

The juveniles in the BJ McLachlan Stakes field often come off a lead-up run at the Brisbane tracks earlier in the summer including the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1100m) for the fillies and the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1100m) for the colts & geldings.

The BJ McLachlan Stakes entries draw horses largely from Queensland stables, but some more talented types from interstate might make the journey. Quite a few horses enter the BJ McLachlan Stakes field in an endeavour to get a last black-type start prior to heading to the paddock or lining up for the Magic Millions.

The 2023 BJ McLachlan Stakes field will be provided below the week of the race once announced by Racing Queensland.

The BJ McLachlan Stakes 2023 final field features a small but class line-up of promising youngsters led in betting by the odds-on favourite, Justify colt Storm Boy, from the Sydney stables of Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott who comes off a big win on debut at Rosehill with more weight.
