The Lord Mayor’s Cup is a Group 3 race now held at Eagle Farm Racecourse annually in late May or early June on Kingsford Smith Cup Day. Previously run under weight-for-age conditions over a distance of 1600m, the Lord Mayor’s Cup is now a set weights plus penalties event contested over 1800m.
The race now serves as a potential lead-up into the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) run over two miles a fortnight later on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
The Lord Mayor’s Cup shares a race card with a host of other Group status races including the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) that is a new lead-up into the Stradbroke Handicap and the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) for the two-year-olds targeting a Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) run over the Eagle Farm mile a fortnight later.
As of 2021, the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) for the season’s top three-year-old stayers also runs on the same card.
The Lord Mayor’s Cup also now offers a ballot exemption to the winner into the $1.2 million Group 2 The Q22 (2200m) run at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
In 2022 Kolding ran third in the Lord Mayor’s Cup before a next-up second in that winter’s The Q22 results.
Without A Fight (2023) was the last horse to complete the BRC Lord Mayor’s Cup – The Q22 double.
The 2023 Lord Mayor’s Cup field was further franked with Without A Fight also going on to win that spring’s Melbourne Cup race in November.
The 2024 Lord Mayor’s Cup runs on Saturday June 1, 2024 at Eagle Farm in Brisbane as a lead-up to later events including The Q22.
