The Anthony Cummings-trained Turffontein claimed his second Group 1 victory of his career on Saturday when the five-year-old entire took out the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.
In an unexpected upset, Turffontein ($12) beat home eight of the best sprinters in the 1200m Group 1 feature, including runner-up Wanted ($4.60) by half a neck and third placegetter Sniper?s Bullet ($12).
Warm pre-race favourite, Lightning Stakes winner Nicconi ($3) ran a lacklustre sixth and will try to make amends overseas when trainer David Hayes takes him to England.
Fifth placegetter Master O?Reilly ran a gallant first-up race, with trainer Danny O?Brien saying it was an excellent preparatory run for next month?s Australia Cup.
Turffontein, who also has the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clark Stakes to his name, will now be aimed at the Newmarket Handicap on March 6.
