Recap of Yosei’s Win in the 2010 AJC Sires Produce Stakes Ahead of Skilled and Hinchinbrook

At Randwick’s AJC Derby Day on Saturday, promising filly Yosei claimed a surprise win in the $300,000 Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) giving her trainer Stuart Webb his first Group 1 victory.

After an intense and tight sprint over the final 100 metres, it was Yosei ($18) who emerged as the narrow victor after running on the rails, just a short-half head in front of Peter Snowden’s Skilled ($11) with the Gerald Ryan-trained Hinchinbrook ($5.50) in third.

It was a disappointing finish the Gai Waterhouse-trained $3.90 favourite More Strawberries, coming off a gallant third in the coveted Golden Slipper, who finished a lacklustre seventh.

But with less than four lengths separating the first eight runners, and only half a length between the top four, it was a chaotic and challenging run.

Yosei, who won on debut back in mid-February in the Benalla Maiden, was ridden by Michelle Payne in the AJC Sires Produce on Saturday making Payne the first female jockey to ride a Group 1 winner at Randwick.

Payne secured her first Group 1 victory aboard the Bart Cummings-trained Allez Wonder in the Toorak Handicap last spring and since then has gone from strength to strength. She will attempt another elite level victory next Saturday when she again pairs up with Allez Wonder in the Doncaster Mile.

Caulfield-based trainer Webb is now looking at the $300,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) as a final autumn run for Yosei on April 24.

Two other great Group 1 features ran at Randwick on Saturday. Shoot Out snared victory in the highlight event, the $1.3 million AJC Australian Derby (2400m) while the $500,000 Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes was taken out by Melito.
