After the release of the Thousand Guineas 2012 final field on Monday morning bookmakers around the country have updated their odds on the three-year-old fillies’ feature running at Caulfield Racecourse this Wednesday, October 17, with the Will Clarken-trained Molto Bene installed at the top of the markets.

Edward Manifold Stakes winner Maybe Discreet is second favourite for the 2012 Thousand Guineas this Saturday

Due to jump at 3:40pm (AEST) as Caulfield Race 6 on Wednesday the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) originally drew a capacity field of 16 starters plus two emergencies.

At least one of those emergencies in the Shane Nichols-trained Meditrina, a $201 roughie, is now due to gain a start following the early scratching of #6 Jade Marauder who will be sent to the paddock as planned after connections accepted her into the Guineas by mistake.

It is a wide open Thousand Guineas this year with Adelaide filly Molto Bene the narrow $5 favourite to win in the latest markets at bookmaker.com.au.

A winner of her opening two starts as a juvenile back in April including the Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) the daughter of Royal Academy has had two runs this time in most recently finishing a half length away third in the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on September 22.

Ace hoop Craig Williams retains the ride on Saturday, the duo sure to appreciate barrier five (into 4) after jumping from 12 of 15 in the Prelude.

There are then three other single-figure chances in the Thousand Guineas odds with:

• #4 Maybe Discreet ($6.50) – Another classy filly from Morphettville, this Phillip Stokes-trained Shamardal three-year-old has won their past two on the trot firstly the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m) back home by three and then narrowly taking out the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) at Flemington from barrier 15 of 16 in their Melbourne debut. Right Distance With Improvement in This Miss.
• #8 Commanding Jewel ($7) – Breeding is right in this Leon Corstens-trained daughter of Commands as a three-quarter sister to last year’s Thousand Guineas winner Atlantic Jewel who did it by three, ran a close secon dinthe Prelude and then wasn’t far away when a quarter length away third in the Edward Manifold. Pedigree Perfect can Mumma Regard Get the Goods Again?
• #11 Love For Ransom ($8) – Greg Eurell’s Red Ransom filly has won two from three to date but needs to improve on her ninth (of 10) at Caulfield over 1400m last time out, hasn’t been to the mile but will appreciate dropping back from 59kg to 55.5kg. Out Wide and Would Need To Surprise.

Other fillies at slightly longer prices still in with a genuine chance then include John Thompson’s Tea Rose Stakes winner upon protest Longport ($11) who ran a distant second to Crown Oaks-bound Norzita in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last time out, Dubawi filly who has won two on the trot Lady Of Harrods ($13) winner of the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes and then the Prelude in a tight but unconvincing finish, Zabeel filly Zydeco ($14) coming off an Edward Manifold fifth, and Edward Manifold runner-up Member’s Joy ($16).
