Kent Fleming’s Gold Coast galloper Lucky Hussler will look to extend their winning streak to three from three this Saturday when they race in their maiden black type race assignment at Eagle Farm, the 2012 Gold Edition Plate.
One of 15 gallopers accepted for this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m), the field led by the Kelso Wood-trained Sizzling, lightly-raced Husson colt Lucky Hussler is undefeated this time in having won back-to-back races in Brisbane.
At their third career start they enjoyed a smashing first-up win at Doomben taking out a maiden by five and a half lengths after overcoming barrier 10 of 11.
They backed up 11 days later and handled a Slow (7) at Eagle Farm to win again, this time defeating Sookie by one and a quarter lengths in a 3YO open handicap.
Saturday sees them step up in class for the Gold Edition Plate, and while they will have to be at their best facing a star-studded field, Fleming is quietly confident.
“He’s done it pretty well this time in and has earned his shot at a race like this,” Fleming said.
He does however acknowledge that Group 1 winning Snitzel colt Sizzling will take some beating as they step down in class.
“We’re stepping in the ring with Mike Tyson. Let’s see what he’s got,” Fleming said.
One thing punters may be concerned about is barrier nine of 15 draw, but Fleming believes the gate will give jockey Matthew Palmer options.
“We can assess the pace and slot in where suitable,” he said.
Lucky Hussler however must not only be competitive, they need to finish in the Gold Edition Plate quinella for Fleming to continue them on with his summer racing plans next month.
The trainer is eyeing off the lucrative $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) for the up-and-coming galloper on January 12.
Lucky Hussler however is well down the current Magic Millions Guineas order of entry sitting 32nd, the ballot lead by the one to beat in the Gold Edition on Saturday – Sizzling, and must get their prize money up in time to make the cut.
“I’d say he needs to win or place at his next two starts, which I think he can do, to get a run in the Magic Millions race,” he said.
After Saturday Fleming will back Lucky Hussler up in the $150,000 Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) at Doomben on December 29 before the Guineas a fortnight later.
“After Saturday we’ll head to the Vo Rogue and then the Guineas,” he confirmed.
