A capacity field of 18 starters plus a single emergency has been accepted for Saturday’s Villiers Stakes 2012 final field, the Sydney Summer Racing Carnival feature Monton’s chance to make history.
Ron Quinton’s Catbird six-year-old heads the field for the $175,000 Group 2 Inglis Villiers Stakes (1600m) as the 59kg top-weight in the number one saddlecloth.
Last year Monton won the Villiers Stakes on the back of a win in the Festival Stakes and will be out on Saturday to enter the history books as the first horse to be successful in multiple Villiers Stakes.
After running a brave second in the Festival Stakes last time out this season the galloper has the right form and should get a gun run from barrier four with apprentice hoop Sam Clipperton retaining the ride.
Following Monton in the Villiers Stakes field and weights are then Chris Waller’s out of form veteran Triple Elegance (57kg) with barrier 18 to overcome, Gai Waterhouse’s last start Goulburn Cup champ Kinnersley (56.5kg) also wide in gate 13 and the local Matthew Smith-trained mare Cabernet (55kg) who ran a close fifth in the Festival Stakes last time out on the back of a Summoned Stakes win at Sandown.
Along with Kinnersley there are two other last start winners in the mix this year with John Sargent’s Kiwi visitor Holy Moly in barrier three with Jim Cassidy to ride and the Peter Moody-trained Shout Out Loud on the rails in gate one with Joshua Parr booked.
Moody is the sole Victorian trainer represented in the Villiers Stakes field this year and he has accepted for two from his stables with last start Victoria Cup victor Shout Out Loud to be joined by Group 2 winner Highly Recommended.
Sydney horseman Peter Snowden meanwhile will also saddle up multiple hopefuls in the race with Festival Stakes third placed Galah, Quidnunc in the extreme outside gate and Commands mare Classics.
Other notable hopefuls include the Bede Murray-trained Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner Darci Be Good who suffered a blow drawing barrier 17, Magic Albert gelding Isopach and the Anthony Cummings-trained Shadows In The Sun out to improve on their 14th in the Festival Stakes.
