A promising line-up of youngsters will take to the Flemington track this Saturday in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes 2013 which has drawn a capacity field of two-year-olds.
Set to run as Newmarket Handicap Day Race 3 at 1:20pm (AEST) the $220,000 Group 2 Henry Bucks Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) field originally drew 16 starters plus three emergencies.
First emergency Mubakkir has since gained a start however following the early scratching of the Peter Snowden-trained San Diego who drew a horror barrier of 18.
There are five last start winners in the VRC Sires’ Produce field this weekend the most notable of which is Bjorn Baker’s Twilight Royale.
Drawn in gate 10 with Michael Rodd to ride the Testa Rossa filly has won two of her four starts to date most recently taking out the Inglis Premier by an impressive 2.5 lengths at Mornington on February 13.
The third placegetter from that race, Lannister, is also accepted for the Sires’ Produce but Mick Price’s Reaan colt drew terribly with gate 17.
The other last-start winners looking for back-to-back wins are then the David Payne-trained Rutherglen drawn ideally in gate two with Craig Williams to ride as they come off a big three length effort over 1300m at Newcastle, Consorting, the Peter Moody-trained Weinholt who thrashed their rivals at Ballarat by seven lengths on February 21 and Adelaide raider Gamblin Guru coming off a win back home a fortnight ago.
The Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained New Approach gelding is the only horse that won on debut and backs up in the Sires’ Produce which was the form for last year’s winner, Black Caviar’s spruik half-brother All Too Hard.
All Too Hard won the race at just their second start on the back of a Talindert Stakes victory.
All Too Hard has since become one of the most valuable stud prospects in history having won the Caulfield Guineas, CF Orr Stakes and the Futurity Stakes.
Also in the mix this Saturday are the likes of Robbie Laing’s well-tried Charge Forward colt Direct Charge who won the Group 3 HKJC Maribyrnong Plate last November at the track, local hope Epic Saga and Snitzel colt Shamus Award coming off a credible fifth to Miracles Of Life in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes.
