The second biggest race on the Golden Slipper Day program at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday will be the lucrative 2013 The BMW where a quality field of 12 weight-for-age hopefuls is engaged to face off.
Due to jump as Rosehill Race 5 at 2:35pm (AEST) the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW Stakes (2400m) is one of five Group 1 features at the meeting and is shaping up as a top showdown in 2013 between some nice staying types.
Sure-to-be favourite is Anthony Cummings’ perennial second placegetter Fiveandahalfstar, winner of last year’s Victoria Derby, who has drawn barrier six with Hugh Bowman to ride.
Runner-up in all four of their assignments this time in, the talented Hotel Grand three-year-old races in their third straight Group 1 race after their close second to Super Cool in the Australian Cup at Flemington and then to Foreteller in the Ranvet Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill on March 23.
Fiveandahalfstar has a tough couple of weeks ahead as they are likely to back-up after The BMW a week later in the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick where they will face It’s A Dundeel who won the Rosehill Guineas, a race Cummings opted to bypass.
“The Rosehill Guineas was there if I thought he needed to run before the BMW,” Cummings explained.
“But I decided against it.
“It’s A Dundeel seems to be the one to beat in the Derby but we’ll get through the BMW first.”
Upset Ranvet Stakes winner Foreteller is also backing up in The BMW 2013 as are third and fourth placegetters Maluckyday, runner-up in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, and Anthony Freedman’s reigning Doomben Cup champion Mawingo.
The Chris Waller-trained Dansili six-year-old Foreteller steps up to the mile and a half for the first time on Saturday which is the unknown factor as they vie for back-to-back elite levels.
Along with Foreteller Waller has also accepted for two other hopefuls in The BMW field this year with Kelinni on the rails as they look to bounce back from a Ranvet Stakes sixth with Nash Rawiller to ride and his imported European stayer Gatewood, winner of the Geelong Cup in the spring.
Also in the mix are the likes of Grahame Begg’s Group 1 winning mare Silent Achiever, the Tony McEvoy-trained improver Le Roi, recent Auckland Cup winner Sangster whose connections paid the hefty $60,000 late entry to get them into the mix and reigning Sydney Cup champ Niwot.
