Dual Group 1 winning local champ Playing God lines-up in Saturday’s Hyperion Stakes 2013 at WA’s Belmont Racecourse looking to break a lengthy 18 month winning drought.
Set to run as Race 7 at 3:47pm (local time) this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) is the sole Group race of the weekend and has drawn a class field of 16 Perth gallopers.
To wear the No. 1 saddlecloth from out wide in gate 13 with regular rider Steven Parnham aboard is the Neville Parnham-trained Playing God.
The now five-year-old Blackfriars stallion boasts two Group 1 titles but hasn’t won a race since the latest, the 2011 Kingston Town Classic.
Since then things have been a bit hit and miss including their two runs this time in.
A first-up third off a four and a half month break in the Group 3 Roma Cup (1200m) looked promising on May 18 but Playing God was a well beaten fifth to Kerrific when 60kg got the better of them in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) at the start of this month.
Getting back to weight-for-age conditions for the Hyperion Stakes however should suit as they will meet Kerrific on equal weights.
The Bruce Watkins & Gary Hitchock-trained Belmont Sprint winner had just 55.5kg for that victory, Blackfriars six-year-old Kerrific sure to feel the 59kg on Saturday when they jump from gate seven vying for successive Group victories.
Following Playing God in the Hyperion Stakes field and weights meanwhile is their stablemate God Has Spoken (barrier 15) who was disappointing in both the Roma Cup when dead last beaten 16 lengths by the winner Power Princess and the Belmont Sprint when 11th to Kerrific.
Also coming via a run in the Belmont Sprint are the likes of the Daniel Morton-trained Oratorio five-year-old Belora (2nd) drawn nicely in gate two for Saturday and Grant Williams’ multiple stakes winner Ranger (3rd) who also ran a close second in the Roma Cup when resuming.
Other notable Hyperion Stakes hopes then include Parnham’s third runner Bridgestone in the ‘visitor’s’ gate, the ultra-consistent Black Tycoon who has won five of their eight starts this year, the Grant Williams-trained Moonlight Bay coming off a Belmont Sprint fourth with the inside alley, and Stan Bates’ Spinning World mare Miss Tipsy Topsy.
