Group 1 racing comes to a close for another season at Eagle Farm this Saturday with the 2013 Tattersall’s Tiara, odds on the female thoroughbred classic narrowly led by Guy Walter’s dual elite level champion Streama.
Winner of the Flight Stakes – Australian Oaks double in her three-year-old season, the now four-year-old daughter of Stratum vies for her third Group 1 success in the weekend’s $500,000 Group 1 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
After coming up trumps with the inside running from barrier one, Streama is well fancied to improve on her last start third to Linton in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at the same track a fortnight ago.
In the early Tattersall’s Tiara odds she sits top of the markets at $4.20 with Hugh Bowman to ride.
Hot on her heels however is the Chris Waller-trained Red Tracer at $4.80 who has drawn at the opposite end of the field in barrier 16.
The ultra-consistent Dane Shadow five-year-old is yet to break through at Group 1 level having narrowly been edged out of the trophies by Appearance in both the Coolmore Classic and Queen Of The Turf Stakes during the autumn in Sydney.
She comes off an eye-catching win from Stradbroke Day when overcoming another horror barrier (16 of 18) to beat home a field full of Tattersall’s Tiara hopes in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m).
There are then three other single figure fancies in the Tattersall’s Tiara betting markets with:
- #16 Peron ($8) – Smart young Husson three-year-old shooting for her fourth on the trot, last start winner of the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) seven days ago on Saturday, steps up in class but if handles it will be hard to hold out, must overcome gate 13 however with trainer John Thompson vying for his second Tatt’s tiara trophy in as many years
- #4 Skyerush ($9) – Stablemate of the favourite Streama this fellow Walter-trained Sydney visitor won her last two in April at Randwick over the mile including the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes for the second year in a row, runs very well fresh so gets that advantage here, distance looks good first-up and one to watch
- #6 Steps In Time ($9) – John O’Shea-trained five-year-old has been disappointing of late including her last start seventh to Red Tracer in the Dane Ripper, that was from gate 17 of 18 though and could be better from barrier 10 here
Other longer priced hopefuls out to score an upset Tattersall’s Tiara result at double figure prices for the punters then include Spirit Song ($12) with a gun draw in gate two, Waller’s other runner She’s Clean ($12) vying for her third win on the trot and the 2011 Tattersall’s Tiara winner Yosei ($16) getting some early support to break a lengthy dry spell.
