Ibicenco Tops 2013 Queensland Cup Field

Peter Moody’s Sandown Cup winner Ibicenco will vie for their breakthrough win for their current trainer when they lead out a quality Queensland Cup 2013 field at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday.

A final field of 13 stayers has been accepted for the two mile classic this weekend, Ibicenco the 59kg top-weight in the $150,000 Listed BMag Queensland Cup (3200m).

Previously prepared in Europe by Luca Cumani Ibicenco raced in Melbourne during the spring targeting the iconic $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November.

They missed out on a Melbourne Cup start however but did win a consolation race for connections over the same distance as Saturday’s Queensland Cup taking out the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) in late November.

Transferred to Moody’s care at the end of their spring prep the Shirocco stallion has failed to finish in the money in their three runs this time in.

Most recently they were seen finishing fourth to Rialya in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 22.

Returning to the same track for the Queensland Cup Ibicenco, drawn in gate five with Brad Rawiller to ride, is expected to improve as they step up in distance.

The only concern however is their big weight giving a minimum four kilo advantage to their rivals.

Gwenda Markwell’s Peal Of Bells meanwhile is the only other runner in the Queensland Cup field above the 54kg minimum with 55kg.

Drawn in gate nine with Glen Colless to ride the Clangalang gelding enjoyed two barnstorming wins earlier this campaign before a disaster run at Rosehill on Monday.

A seven length winner of the Stayers Cup over the 3200m at Randwick on June 8, Peal Of Bells ran in the rescheduled Listed Winter Cup (2400m) but failed to handle the Heavy (9) course at Rosehill and was defeated over 23 lengths when dead last behind easy winner Destiny’s Kiss.

Markwell has accepted for them to back-up off that just five days later, but whether they do in fact start in the Queensland Cup remains up in the air.

There are four last start winners vying for successive victories in the Queensland Cup this Saturday meanwhile.

One of those have also drawn the inside alley with the Michael Nolan-trained Dodging Eddie to jump from gate one with Rick McMahon in the saddle.

The five-year-old Dodge gelding hails from Toowoomba and was second in their home town cup when defeated by just a neck back on June 2.

They were last seen running away with a two length victory on the all weather track up there on June 27 in a benchmark 80 and run in Brisbane for the first time since January.

The other last start winners are then the Bruce Hill-trained Buffett coming off a blistering six length victory over 2200m in the mud at the Gold Coast last Sunday, Alan Jones’ first-up winner at the Sunshine Coast by four lengths Clonmacnoise and Court Command three-year-old Fifth Column who relished a Heavy (9) at Ipswich last Saturday to score a five length victory.

Other notable hopes then include the Robert Smerdon-trained Verdant, Muirfield coming off a Caloundra Cup sixth and Plumpton-based mudlark Turner Bayou.
