2013 Epsom Handicap Odds Update

Since betting on the Epsom Handicap 2013 final field opened earlier in the week there’s been a number of market moves for today’s Sydney Spring Racing Carnival feature.

Streama

Running as Royal Randwick Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST) the $500,000 Group 1 The Star Epsom (1600m) field is down to 16 runners following the early scratching of the injured #11 Lidari, Peter Moody’s Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes third placegetter rated a $15 chance before their withdrawal.

Epsom Handicap betting meanwhile was led at the start of the week by Guy Walter’s Cameron Handicap winner Toydini who opened around $4.80 despite their awkward barrier 14 draw.

The four-year-old however has eased out to $5 in the markets but remains the favourite thanks to their 54kg lightweight, a full four kilos less than they carried to victory in the Group 3 at Newcastle on September 18.

Second spot in the Epsom Handicap odds however now belongs to Toydini’s stablemate, Walter’s multiple Group 1 winning mare Streama.

Firming in from $6.50 to $5.50 Streama scored her third elite level last start when beating a crack field in the Group 1 George Main Stakes over the Randwick mile which she sees again here.

There are now two runners occupying the third line in the markets at a quote of $6.50, one a market mover the other a drifter in betting.

The first is the upcoming Gai Waterhouse-trained Ecuador in from $7.50.

A son of High Chaparral, Ecuador is Waterhouse’s best chance of securing her eighth Epsom trophy and will be ridden by Tommy Berry on the back of a good second at Rosehill.

For that run they had 60kg on their back but drop to the 53kg minimum, an Epsom Handicap form fact that hasn’t gone undetected by the punters!

The other $6.50 chance is then the Chris Waller-trained Boban who has eased out from $5.50 second favouritism earlier in the week.

Drawn in gate 11, Boban is also running with just 53kg today, the Bernardini four-year-old coming off back-to-back Sydney wins.

Their recent form is very good, including a last start victory in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m), but he punters still need convincing as Bill Ritchie winners have a poor recent record when backing up in the Epsom.

One of the best backed Epsom hopes meanwhile is Boban’s stablemate Riva De Lago in from $17 to $13 to back-up from their Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes victory over the 1400m at Rosehill with a mile win here.
