Ted Martinovich’s flying young colt Jezpark heads a talented field of promising two-year-olds in the feature race at Ascot Racecourse in Perth this weekend, the Karrakatta Plate 2014.
Running as Race 7 at 4:25pm (local time), this year’s $500,000 Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) has drawn a capacity field of 16 starters.
One of those has already been scratched however, the David Harrison-trained Molto Allegro (barrier 18) who will be replaced by first emergency Vitalism in gate two.
Heading the field though is an in-form son of Bletchley Park, Jezpark, who shoots for their third win on the trot here.
They stepped up to black type company for the first time two back at the start of the month and held on in a narrow finish to defeat Big Caroline by a nose in the Listed Supremacy Stakes (1100m).
Then on March 15 at the same track and distance they did it again, this time beating home Chengdu by a half length in the Listed Perth Stakes (1100m).
On Saturday Jezpark will again be ridden by Jarrad Noske who stays on after riding the juvenile to both their wins, the duo to jump from a favourable barrier five draw.
The gallopers that finished second and third behind Jezpark in the Perth Stakes last time out have also both been accepted for the Karrakatta Plate field where they’ll have a shot at Group 2 glory on WA Oaks Day.
Runner-up Chengdu has gate 11 with William Pike riding, the Daniel Morton-trained Manhattan Rain colt after their maiden win at start number four.
So Secret grey Hobart Jones meanwhile has drawn one inside their last start conqueror, the Perth Stakes third placegetter to jump from barrier four with Jason Brown in the saddle.
A winner of their opening two career starts at Ascot back in December, Hobart jones also ran an eye-catching third to Jezpark in the Supremacy Stakes first-up and will be looking to finally turn the tables of them here.
The major Karrakatta Plate danger this year meanwhile is being touted as one of Morton’s other runners, Cadenza in barrier nine with Shaun O’Donnell booked to ride the likely favourite.
The talented Oratorio filly won on debut at Ascot back on February 8 before narrowly defeating Rommel in the Magic Millions Perth Classic just seven days later.
Her latest effort was also a beauty when second in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes for the fillies on March 15, an effort she’s likely to improve on here as she was blocked for a run that start.
Moront’s third representative in this year’s Karrakatta Plate field is then Gimcrack Stakes third placegetter, Blackfirars filly Kamballie (barrier 1).
Along with Jezpark there are then four other last start winners in the mix including the Neville Parnham-trained Rommel (barrier 14).
A son of Commands, Rommel has won two of their three assignments so far, most recently carrying 58kg to victory here on March 8 making the 56.5kg under set weights in the Karrakatta favourable.
Also coming off wins are the undefeated trio of Django with the rails run, the Simon Miller-trained Gimcrack Stakes champ Fuld’s Bet who has also won both their career starts and the Lou & Dion Luciani-trained Prete A Partir who won their debut three weeks ago.
Other notable Karrakatta Plate hopes not without their chances then include up-and-comer Red Publisher in barrier three, the Simon Foster-trained Supremacy Stakes runner-up Big Caroline coming off a four length Bunbury trial win and the awesomely consistent Versed Remedy who has run second in their past four consecutive starts.
