Kicking off The Goodwood Day racing action in Adelaide this weekend is the Darley National Stakes 2014 where the top two-year-old in the mix is the Danny O’Brien-trained Melbourne raider Bullpit.
Due to jump at 11:55am (local time) at Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday, this year’s $115,000 Group 3 Darley National Stakes (1200m) for the two-year-olds has attracted a final field of nine promising juveniles.
The best performing of those is O’Brien’s Speed ‘n’ Power gelding Bullpit shooting for their third win from five runs here.
After breaking their maiden status second-up at Moonee Valley in late March, Bullpit ran fourth at Caulfield when stepping up to 1200m for the first time on April 12.
A fortnight later O’Brien bought them to South Australia for a shot at some Black Type in the Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes (1050m).
It was a successful interstate assignment too with Bullpit posting a one and a quarter length victory over Picking Time in the event.
Now they will shoot for back-to-back Adelaide wins in the National Stakes where they have drawn barrier six and will be ridden by Craig Newitt for the first time.
Also coming via a decent run in the Queen Adelaide Stakes is the David Hayes-trained Tender who has drawn nicely with barrier two for Saturday’s rematch.
The All American filly, also based in Victoria, has had three runs to date including her last two at stakes level at Morphettville and is out to improve on those with a bit of experience now under her belt.
Along with Bullpit the only other runner in the Darley National with a win to their name is the Peter Moody-trained Sweet And Speedy who jumps from gate three here with Luke Nolen in the saddle.
A nicely-bred daughter of Street Cry the up-and-coming filly debuted with a second at Sale in the mud (Heavy 8) in early April.
She improved on that back at the track on April 27 however when going over 1210m to beat home She’s All That by one and a quarter lengths carrying 58kg, the drop back to 54kg under set weights plus penalties for the weekend to suit.
Troy Corstens’ runner-up in that race, Fastnet Rock filly She’s All That also makes the trip to Adelaide for the National Stakes where she has drawn gate seven with Dwayne Dunn to ride.
All the other runners have previous race experience bar the Mick Price-trained Moonovermanhattan.
Drawn on the rails with Damien Oliver booked for the mount the grey debutant will be looking to make an immediate impact as the unknown in the field.
