This year’s $650,000 Group 1 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1350m) runs as the eighth race on a bumper nine-race program and is due to jump at 3:40pm (AEST).

In the number one saddlecloth is Buffering who is also leading Doomben 10,000 betting ($3.90 out to $4.20) after drawing exactly where trainer Robert Heathcote was hoping, in barrier eight.

One and a half lengths away third after getting run down as the favourite in the BTC Cup last start but looking to bounce back with a bit of luck after getting treated by a chiropractor for issues that likely affected their run there.

Our 2014 Doomben 10,000 Trifecta Tip is #4 Rebel Dane from #1 Buffering and #2 Spirit Of Boom

Doomben 10,000 odds are tight though with plenty of other livewire chances including Sydney’s Rebel Dane ($4.40) looking to atone for an average All Aged fifth last time out and the Tony Gollan-trained Spirit Of Boom ($4.80) who never runs a bad race.

But are these three shorties in the markets the ones to lock into your Doomben 10,000 trifecta?

Or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained Famous Seamus ($8) after the BTC Cup – Doomben 10,000 double or even John O’Shea’s promising stakes winner Knoydart ($10)?

1st

#4 Rebel Dane ($4.40)

Gary Portelli’s California Dane four-year-old led the markets earlier but eased out after drawing wide in barrier 10 while their biggest danger Buffering came up on their inside with gate eight. History shows this is a race for the seasoned gallopers with just one four-year-old saluting in the past 10 years, but fancy this Sydney raider to be the next and atone for their last start. After an excellent first-up second to Lankan Rupee in the TJ Smith Stakes they flopped in the All Aged when fifth, but that’s the exact form last year’s 10,000 winner Epaulette had. They beat the locals in a form reversal in Queensland and tipping Rebel Dane to do the same. Has the second best Win Rate (43%) and top record over this distance (5-3-1-0).

2nd

#1 Buffering ($4.20)

Hardly anything in this finish is our guess, Buffering to come much closer than in the BTC Cup last time out. Has contested the past two editions of this for a 2nd and a 3rd, but to their credit they’ve since broken their Group 1 duck and enjoyed a trifecta of interstate elite level victories. Jumped favourite in the BTC Cup but a sore head saw them lead before being beaten into third. Heathcote says they are jumping out of their skin after getting those issues sorted over the past couple of weeks, so if he’s right Buffering will be hard to beat especially at this track (9-3-1-4).

3rd

#2 Spirit Of Boom ($4.80)

Tony Gollan’s Sequalo six-year-old is very honest and has run top two in their past five starts. Won the Group 1 William Reid Stakes three back in Melbourne, their first Group 1 success, and then comes off two seconds. First was in the Victory and then their BTC Cup effort which was a beauty and hints at them finishing off better here than their fourth last year. Gets a gun run form gate two, inside alleys an advantage at Doomben, and will relish the step up to 1350m.
