Brett Pope’s smart three-year-old Bayatorio has come up trumps with the inside alley for their step up to stakes company in the weekend’s Belmont Guineas 2014 in Western Australia.
The field for the Belmont Park feature, running as Race 7 on Saturday, was released this morning with a capacity line-up of 16 starters plus four emergencies accepted for the $100,000 Listed Waroa Belmont Guineas (1600m).
One of the top fancies is the in-form Bayatorio in barrier one, Shaun O’Donnell to ride the Pinjarra-based Oratorio gelding.
They’ve won their past two on the trot over the 1400m here earning a step up to the mile, and Black Type company.
Last start Bayatorio carried 57.5kg to a long neck win over Shilling in a Benchmark 64 here on June 7 and they drop back a kilo under the set weights conditions of Saturday’s showdown.
Runner-up in that race, Garry Delane’s progressive Stratum colt Shilling is also backing up in the Belmont Guineas, as is the third placed Happy With Kendel who is out wide in 17 (into 14 with the emergencies out).
Shilling has won two of their five starts to date and is yet to finish out of the money.
They also have a nice barrier five draw for Saturday but their recent rider O’Donnell jumps off to ride Bayatorio, Ben Kennedy then getting a ride in the weekend’s feature.
Along with Bayatorio there are two other last start winners in the starting 16 with the Jarrad Humphries-trained Ruling Force (barrier three) and Tick Tick Bloom.
Adam Durrant’s talented Viscount filly Tick Tick Bloom has suffered an early blow for her Black Type debut here drawing wide with barrier 19 (possibly into 16).
William Pike turned down a host of other opportunities in the race though to stick with her so will be doing his best from the horror gate.
Tick Tick Bloom has won her past two starts with Pike in the saddle over 1650m here at Belmont so is sure to feature heavily in the markets still based on her ace record at the track and distance.
Other widely-drawn fancy with claims are then the Grant Williams-trained duo of Arcadia Rose (18) and Star Of Husson (16).
Perennial runner-up Arcadia Rose comes off three straight second place finishes this time in at Belmont, the last of which was behind the Simon Miller-trained Sujet over 1200m just last Saturday.
The Kheleyf filly then is on the short back-up but is ready to fire and keep the good form going with only two unplaced runs to her name from eight starts to date.
Star Of Husson meanwhile has Kyra Yuill riding in place of Pike, the daughter of Husson having won three on the trot before her last start fourth over 2200m here on May 31.
She was beaten only one and a quarter lengths by Saxy Grace in that race and will need to be at her sharpest here dropping right back in distance to the 1600m.
Her last two runs over a similar distance (1675m) though produced back-to-back wins at Bunbury in April and May so she could relish coming back to the mile.
Williams has also accepted for a third runner in Blackfriars filly Midnight Shimmer who fared much better in the Belmont Guineas barrier draw with gate four and Glenn Smith riding.
