Trainer John O’Shea has confirmed standout two-year-old Earthquake has resumed light work in preparation for busy 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, likely to be geared towards the Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) in October.
In what has been a big week for Darley’s 2014 two-year-olds, with the new trainer also confirming Todman Stakes champion Ghibellines returning to work ahead of spring, O’Shea is delighted with how the Exceed And Excel filly has taken to her time in the paddock and revealed she will gradually work her way towards peak condition.
“She’s in very good order. I don’t think she’s grown a lot but she seems very well,” O’Shea told TVN.
“She’s a week away from starting her fast work.”
Working towards the Group 1 for three-year-old fillies at Royal Randwick on October 4th, O’Shea said Earthquake will travel to Victoria for the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) just one week later if her form and condition deems it an appropriate move.
“Her aim will be the Flight Stakes in Sydney then we’ll asses where she’s at,” O’Shea added.
“The Thousand Guineas in Melbourne is always an option with fillies of this class.”
Strolling home to win the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) on debut on November 9th, Earthquake stamped her claims as 2014’s best two-year-old when continuing her sensational form with a victory in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) first-up this year before breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australia racing in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 22nd.
Continuing to build in class with a strong win in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, Earthquake was unable to completely handle the heavy going of the Rosehill Gardens track when contesting the featured Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), finishing second to Mossfun.
