2014 San Domenico Stakes Nominations Missing Mossfun

Early nominations for Saturday’s San Domencio Stakes 2014 in Sydney attracted less than 10 hopeful three-year-olds and are without drawcard contender Mossfun.

The Team Hawkes-trained Golden Slipper winning filly Mossfun was a possibility to return first-up in the $125,000 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.

Her return however has been delayed with another Sydney race to host her much awaited first-up run, where she will likely jump favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au, with the daughter of Mossman heading towards a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on November 1.

“She is coming along well but we are undecided about where she will race first-up,” Hall of Famer John Hawkes told The Daily Telegraph this week.

San Domenico Stakes nominations have also been extended until 11am on Tuesday by Racing New South Wales (RNSW) after just nine runners were entered this morning.

Of those already nominated two come from the local stables of Gerald Ryan who has entered his promising duo of Washington Heights and Ygritte.

Commands colt Washington Heights has had just the one run to date when runner-up behind Hallowed Crown in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) at Randwick back in early April.

They ran well on a Heavy (9) that day and have trialed just once since when fourth to Tuscan Falls over 900m at Rosehill on August 4.

Their stablemate Ygritte meanwhile is more experienced with one win and three seconds on their record form four runs.

The Snitzel filly won at Kembla Grange on debut before her string of second placings including behind Mossfun in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) in mid-February and to Clifton Red in the Group 3 NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Classic (1200m) at Flemington in March.

On the back of a six week freshen up she returned to Randwick in April and was second again this time beaten under a length by Eloping in the Group 3 Keith McKay Handicap (1200m).

Another last start runner-up in the nominations is then the Garry Frazer-trained Sheer Style.

Third to Unencumbered in the Wong Magic Millions Classic before their 14th in the $2 million Gold Coast edition in the summer, the speedy Snitzel filly Sheer Style won at Kensington first-up in June and comes off a second to Inkling over 1150m at that same track from July 26.

The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Duporth colt Inkling was considered for a San Domenico Stakes run also but ran instead last weekend in The Rosebud finishing a brave third to Scissor Kick after carrying the 59kg top weight.

Along with Ryan, fellow Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse is also dually represented in the current San Domenico Stakes nominations is Team Hawkes.

Waterhouse has entered her returning Redoute’s Choice colt Hampton Court and a son of Snitzel in Wandjina last seen running fourth to Ghibellines in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at the track in March.

Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes then have Group 1 performed Bugatty who won a 900m trial over Brazen Beau last week and Blue Diamond seventh placegetter Nostradamus in the mix.

“Nostradamus is trialling at Hawkesbury and if he does well, then he could run in the San Domenico. Bugatty is another three-year-old that we are thinking about starting in the race,” Hawkes said.

The other more notable hope is then the David Payne-trained Bold Circle who is heading towards a run in Melbourne’s $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11.

The Bernardini colt resumed last Saturday in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) but was disappointing when unable to beat home any of their seven rivals.

Rounding out the nine is then the Chris Waller-trained Denman colt Law who hasn’t raced since their dead last finish (16h) behind Mossfun in the Golden Slipper.

See below for the latest San Domenico Stakes nominees, the final field and barrier draw set for release on Wednesday.
