Last start Tea Rose Stakes winner First Seal has shrugged off her co-favourite status and now sits alone at the top of the 2014 Flight Stakes betting markets for this afternoon’s clash at Randwick.
When betting markets on the $400,000 Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) first opened earlier in the week, the John Thompson-trained First Seal was equal favourite at $2.50 with the filly she beat home fair and square last start, Winx.
The money at Ladbrokes.com.au however has since come in for Thompson’s Fastnet Rock filly and First Seal is leading the markets solo at $2.40 to secure the same Tea Rose Stakes – Flight Stakes double Guelph (2013) did last Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
The Chris Waller-trained Winx meanwhile has eased out in the Flight Stakes odds and is now paying $2.90 to turn the tables on her Tea Rose Stakes conqueror and bounce back to win the Group 1 this afternoon.
There were originally nine final acceptors into the Flight Stakes field but trainer Gai Waterhouse has withdrawn two of her three hopes, #5 Twirl and #8 Muscovado.
That leaves a diminutive field of seven with the only other filly at single figures being the Peter Moody-trained Thinking Of You.
After Moody pulled the pin on her Edward Manifold Stakes run at home in Melbourne this weekend, the undefeated daughter of Thorn Park will shoot for her third career win from as many starts making her Sydney debut here.
She’s being considered for a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) back in Melbourne next Saturday and an early Group 1 win with an upset in the Flight Stakes will see her price in the Guineas markets firm notably.
Waterhouse’s only remaining Flight Stakes hope Echo Gal is then the next best in betting at $13 making her the big market mover after she opened at $17.
Tye Angland rides the Startum filly today taking over from Tim Clark who was aboard for her two most recent runs including a second to Kuro at the tack on September 20 in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m).
