A field of just 11 classy fillies will contest the 2014 Thoroughbred Club Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse this weekend, offering punters some great betting options and the chance to back a winner.
The Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) is one of the eight black-level races on the Guineas Day program this Saturday, for which Earthquake is the firm favourite. Ladbrokes.com.au is offering odds of $1.95 for the filly, ahead of three other single figure hopefuls.
The Godolphin filly, trained by John O’Shea, will enjoy a start from the middle of the field after drawing barrier four with champion jockey Kerrin McEvoy to ride.
Earthquake is the most established filly on the field, so her odds-on favouritism is no surprise. She has placed in all seven of her career starts, including four wins, and has experienced success at the highest Group level after taking out the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in February.
She was unbeaten before April, after which she’s taken away a runner-up finish and two minor placings – her worst performances but by no means bad runs. She missed out on a second in both of her two spring starts by just a head, so she’s definitely still got the speed to come across the line.
It’s a tough betting battle for the Group Three Caulfield race, with three other single figure hopefuls on the field:
- #5 Tawteen ($5) – will enjoy a start from barrier three under jockey Stephen Baster. The filly has won three of her five starts, though she could only manage a minor placing from her first step up to group level last month in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m).
- #8 More Radiant ($5) – Mick Price’s filly is the market mover of the betting field, already shortening from $5.50 to $5. She will jump from the middle of the field with Craig Newitt to ride. More Radiant has yet to grab a win but with only three career starts to her name, now could be that time.
- #6 Ygritte ($9) – is the final single figure hope despite drawing wide in barrier eight. Managed back-to-back second placings at Group Three level earlier in the year but couldn’t find her way last time out in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).
