This weekend a star line-up of Cox Plate Day support races take place at Moonee Valley Racecourse including the Moonee Valley Vase 2014 which takes place one event before the Group 1.
Due to jump at 4:50pm (AEDT) as Race 7, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) is running as the Dilmah Exceptional Teas Vase and originally drew a final field of 14.
The early scratching #14 Miss Interious though leaves 13 hopefuls and, unlike in recent years, it is a wide open market at Ladbrokes.com.au with half the field under $10 in betting.
Last year’s Moonee Valley Vase winner was Savvy Nature who won as a shortie in the markets, the same as Manawanui did when $1.22 odds-on pick two years earlier.
On Saturday however the bookies are having a much harder time separating the genuine contenders from the pretenders with the narrow $5 favourite currently sitting as Chivalry with the rails run from barrier one and Glen Boss riding.
A host of other chances sit hot on his heels in the latest Moonee Valley Vase odds including last start Sydney winner Gouldian ($5.50), Victoria Derby-bound Atmosphere ($5.50) out to break his maiden status and Group 1 winning filly Go Indy Go ($6).
With so many livewire chances, many looking to become the first Vase winner to back-up and also win the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington Saturday week since Efficient (2006), below we’ve got our insider Moonee Valley Vase tips to have you backing the winner at Ladbrokes.com.au.
1st
#6 Duccio ($9)
Is one of the longer priced hopes at the top end of the markets but represents great value and is more than capable of winning despite the wide (barrier 11 into 10) draw. Damien Oliver rides this Gai Waterhouse-trained More Than Ready gelding who looks just that, more than ready to break the black-type duck here after a Canterbury win over 1500m two back and then his second in the Listed Dulcify Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 4. Was under a length off Hampton Court that day and the form was franked when the winner backed up to take out the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) and sit top of the Victoria Derby odds. That form can hold up again here even if the distance is a query and will be up on the pace as he was in the Dulcify before just getting nabbed. Fitter for that run and Waterhouse knows how to get them to make the class rise too.
2nd
#13 Go Indy Go ($6)
The only remaining filly taking on the boys here and can surprise despite the form showing a seventh last time out. Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas’s Bernardini filly won the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) as a juvenile in the autumn over the likes of Zululand and Kumaon but hasn’t reached the same heights this time in. Maybe the extra distance will aid her cause? Valley should suit and if the pace is on she’ll be improving off the Thousand Guineas that was better than it looked on paper.
3rd
#10 Atmosphere ($5.50)
Victoria Derby bound and eager for a win having had three starts but no luck to date. Drawn well in gate four with Nash Rawiller taking over for Oliver, is prepared in New Zealand but this son of Savabeel has raced exclusively in Melbourne so far including a last start second over 1800m behind Magicool in Flemington’s Listed UCI Stakes which was a really nice effort. Distance should suit here and don’t think there will be much in the finish but the tight track could see him beat.
