There will be six black-type races running at Ascot Racecourse in Perth this Saturday, including the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m) offering $200,000 in prize money.
14 horses were nominated for the 2014 AJ Scahill Stakes on Tuesday afternoon, including the headliner Magnifisio.
The Jim P Taylor-trained five-year-old mare is in perfect form following a successful campaign. She missed out on a placing in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) first up by less than a short neck-head before claiming back to back victories in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), beating home top interstate horses like Angelic Light and Moment Of Change.
Magnifisio is also one of just three nominated horses carrying the minimum weight of 57kg, two kilos less than the majority of the field.
Following Magnifisio in the nominations are Amorino, Watermans Bay, and Platinum Rocker – who both lost to Magnifisio in the 2014 Winterbottom Stakes.
Grant Williams’ Amorino won the Listed Bunbury Stakes (1400m) and Listed Grandstand Cup (1500m) during the autumn but finished end of the field in both the Prince of Wales Stakes and Lee Steere Stakes. The gelding did better in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) last time out, finishing less than three lengths behind the winner Elite Belle.
The Daniel Morton-trained Watermans Bay was just a neck away in second in the Winterbottom Stakes while Simon A Miller’s Platinum Rocker was over 11 lengths away in second last place.
Shining Knight and Testamezzo, third and fourth in the Winterbottom Stakes respectively, have also been nominated for the AJ Scahill Stakes, which is setting up to be a rematch. This will be the third consecutive time the pair have raced after Shining Knight beat Testamezzo by one length to win the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m).
Is this the Daniel Pearce-trained gelding’s chance to score his first victory over Shining Knight?
Three horses are all coming via the Listed Carbine Of WA Stakes (1400m) – Crown Lawyer (5th), Express Service (6th), and Kalahaar (8th).
Simon A Miller’s second horse in the AJ Scahill Stakes nominations is Senhor Da Gama, who has been off the track for almost 12 months. The eight-year-old gelding was last seen finishing third in the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) and the established stayer will have to drop dramatically in distance.
