The Magic Millions Open Sprint (1100m) is one of eight races running at the Gold Coast this Saturday, making up the richest summer race meeting – Magic Millions.
A capacity field of 12 sprinters plus two emergencies has declared for the $200,000 race, headlined by Robert Heathcote’s Excellantes. The seven-year-old gelding will carry the top weight of 58.5kg after finding black-type race success during the autumn last year in races such as the Listed Winning Edge Hinkler (1200m) and Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m).
The gelding was last seen finishing runner-up to Saluter in the Hahn Super Dry 3.5 Handicap (1200m) on December 26. He will jump from barrier five with Christian Reith in the saddle.
Kelso Wood’s Seeking More has scored the inside jump from barrier one with Michael Cahill to ride. The five-year-old gelding last won the Jim Bean Handicap (1110m) in April last year but has gone on to place in such races as the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) and a Benchmark 90 over 1050m at Doomben Racecourse.
Seeking More will also carry just half a kilogram more than the 54kg minimum weight, which is a big advantage over the 60.5kg he’s carried his last two times out.
Chris Waller will saddle six horses across the day’s meeting including Whittington in the 2015 Magic Millions Open Sprint.
The four-year-old horse won the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) under the care of Gai Waterhouse during last year’s meeting, which earned her connections over $125,000 in prize money however he has since finished midfield in all five of his starts, including a fifth place run in the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) and Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m).
Whittington will jump from barrier 14 with Hugh Bowman as jockey, one gate out from fellow rival Happy Galaxy.
The Gary Moore-trained five-year-old finished third in the Listed Dandenong Stakes (1200m) back in March last year after which the horse was spelled for six months before returning to a lackluster second last run in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) in September. He didn’t make much of an impression in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) either, finishing third last.
