A small field of just seven middle-distance runners will tackle the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday, five of which are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au. This means punters have a variety of betting options for the $500,000 race.
Headlining the field is the John O’Shea-trained Contributer who is firm favourite at $2.50 while the other four single figure hopefuls are all hovering around the $5 mark.
Contributer is one of four runners coming via the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) on February 28, which he won, meaning he has the upper hand on the majority of the field.
The five-year-old horse settled nicely in sixth place, one off the rails, before moving up well nearing the home turn. He hit the front with 100 metres to go and fought on gamely to win by half a length. It was the second campaign win for Contributer, who also took out the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 14.
Contributer will jump from barrier five with James McDonald to ride and relish the step-up to 2000 metres.
The horse faces some tough competition in his bid for the 2015 Ranvet Stakes title, including from his four single figure rivals.
Japanese horse Tosen Stardom is second favourite at $4.80. The four-year-old will make his Australian debut in Saturday’s race but Tommy Berry believes he’ll be a force to be reckoned with after two trial runs at Canterbury.
Tosen Stardom will enjoy the inside jump from barrier one and was last seen winning the Group 3 Challenge Cup (1800m) in Japan on December 13.
He’s Your Man, Silent Achiever, and Lucia Valentina all share the third line of betting for the Ranvet Stakes at $5.50.
Chris Waller’s He’s Your Man was a fast finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes over 2000 metres back in November and also finished third to Contributer in the Chipping Norton Stakes.
Silent Achiever is the defending champion of the Ranvet Stakes, after taking out last year’s edition during a Group One winning treble.
The six-year-old mare is the market mover of the betting after her price firmed from $6 and will relish the return to 2000 metres after running just shy of the placings her first two starts this campaign at less than a mile.
Kris Lees’ Lucia Valentina rounds out the single figure betting and is another runner that will enjoy the step up in distance to 2000 metres.
