Good Standing takes out 2016 Skyline Stakes, set for Golden Slipper Stakes

Promising two year old Good Standing has earned himself a start in the Golden Slipper Stakes with a solid win in the Group 2 $175,000 Pro-Ride Skyline Stakes (1200m) at Randwick today.

Winning jockey Hugh Bowman settled the James Cummings trained colt just behind the speed and timed his run in the straight to collar in the leader Lionheated ($21) to record a three quarters of a lengths win.

Good Standing was sent out the $3.30 second favourite at his first run back from a spell and will head towards the Group 1 $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 19.

Although Bowman was very impressed with the winning effort of Good Standing, he said that the Artie Schiller colt still has plenty to learn to improve his racing manners.

“He will appreciate the experience of coming to the races. He still did a bit wrong,” Bowman said.

“I know I was in the right position, but he still ran around in the straight and I don’t think his mind was on the job at all.”

“He doesn’t have long to learn what to do because the competition is not going to get any easier.”

The disappointment of the race was the $2.60 favourite Telperion who raced at the tail of the field for James McDonald before doing his best work at the finished to fill fourth spot behind third placegetter and stablemate Souchez ($6).
