2016 Adelaide Cup Field & Barriers: Signoff Draws 2

Red hot favourite and top weight for next Monday’s Adelaide Cup 2016 at Morphettville Racecourse, the Darren Weir-trained Signoff has come up with an inside barrier two draw as he looks to salute for the punters in South Australia on March 14.

Due to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:15pm (local) on Monday, this year’s $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) features a bumper 18-starter field led by in-form Victorian visitor Signoff.

A six-year-old son of Authorized, Signoff carries the 59kg top weight from gate two in the two mile classic with apprentice Harry Coffey retaining the ride despite the Adelaide Cup being a non-claiming race.

Coffey and Signoff, who boasts two previous wins from as many starts at the Adelaide track, have made a very nice team over the past little bit with two wins and a second from three runs going back to December’s Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) victory at Caulfield.

On February 19 the gelding was narrowly defeated when carting a hefty 61.5kg to second bin the Listed Torney Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley before atoning with a Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) wins at Morphettville on March 5.

Signoff blitzed his rivals in the Adelaide Cup lead-up winning as the odds-on favourite by over six lengths.

He goes up two kilos from his winning weight that day, but remains clear favourite for the win in his second look at the 3200m.

The other was in the 2014 Melbourne Cup when he finished fourth to runaway winner Protectionist, form that can more than stack-up in the Adelaide counterpart this season.

Weir’s other runner Real Love drew wider in barrier 12, the former Perth-trained mare carrying 55.5kg in the form of jockey Brad Rawiller.

The five-year-old daughter of Desert King is as yet untested at the distance, but she also saluted over 2600m last time out in Flemington’s Listed Roy Higgins Quality carrying more weight last Saturday.

That was her first win outside of WA where the 2015 Perth Cup winner raced until this summer when taken to Weir’s stables.

Outside of Weir’s dynamic duo, one of the other most notable Adelaide Cup final acceptors this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival is Swacadelic out wide in gate 14 for jockey Kerrin McEvoy.

Aaron Purcell prepares the Warnambool-based Adlerflug gelding, an imported stayer with a win over Signoff on the record in the Torney Cup.

Swacadelic had only 54kg on his back in that February 19 clash and is well-weighted again getting in on 53.5kg for the rematch.

The other notable last start winner in the mix is the David Brunton-trained Up Cups in gate seven carrying 54kg as he shoots for his fifth win on the trot.

Raced in Tasmania, the Helike five-year-old travels up for a shot at the $256,000 first prize on the back of a red hot winning streak at home that includes the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) – Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) double in February.

In gate 11, progressive four-year-old Jim’s Journey also can’t be ruled out completely boasting an excellent Morphettville record of four wins, a second and two thirds from 11 runs at the track.

His winning form extends up to 2600m, the Peter Blanch-trained son of Good Journey fourth to Signoff last time out.

He drops from 56.5kg that run to the 53kg minimum on Monday with top local hoop Dom Tourneur retaining the ride.

Also coming out of the Lord Reims Stakes are the likes of the Grant Young-trained runner-up Celtic Prince who finished second at odds of $151 and looks overs again here in gate four, and his third placed stablemate Tunes.

A rising eight-year-old son of Viscount, Young’s gelding Tunes was third as a 41/1 shot in the Lord Reims and could surprise with another place this weekend to continue his good form even from the second widest alley.
