The super-consistent John O’Shea-trained Old North is close to odds-on territory in Frank Packer Plate 2016 betting for Randwick this weekend on All Aged Stakes Day.
This year’s $150,000 Group 3 TJS Frank Packer Plate (2000m) kicks off the black-type action on the bumper nine-race card for Saturday in Sydney and originally drew a final field of 11 three-year-olds.
The early scratching of the rails-drawn Rong Door Reggie leaves 10 in the mix, the Frank Packer Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au firmly led by Godolphin’s smart Lonhro colt Old North at $2.05.
The youngster has winning form over the distance at Rosehill from March 26 having won the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) to take his record up to three wins from six starts and will be hard to beat here with James McDonald retaining the ride in the set weights clash.
Three other youngsters are under $10 for the win in the latest Frank Packer Plate betting markets including Asinara ($4.40) now into barrier four for jockey Tim Clark.
A stablemate of the short priced favourite, the fellow O’Shea-trained Teofilo filly comes off a Group 1 run when beaten only three and a half-lengths by Single Gaze when seventh in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) late last month.
She did it tough from barrier 12 of 14, faces a smaller field here and is drawn better putting her right in the mix.
The other single figure fancies are then the market mover He’s Our Rokkii ($6.50 into $5.50) and Torgersen ($8.50) now jumping from barriers five and two respectively.
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig prepare the in-form Dwayne Dunn mount He’s Our Rokkii, the three-year-old New Zealand-bred son of Roc De Cambes coming off a win at the track a fortnight back in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) as he gears up for his first look at the 2000m.
Torgersen meanwhile has Hugh Bowman aboard this weekend, the Chris Waller-trained Pins colt looking to improve on his distant 10th over the mile and a half in the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m) from April 2.
Before that run he was second to Saturday’s favourite Old North in the Tulloch Stakes and will appreciate the drop back to 2000m and class this weekend in the rematch.
The only other runner under $26 and out for the upset Frank Packer Plate win this autumn is $14 hopeful Gold Ambition who is another ATC Derby graduate after his seventh to the Kiwi-trained winner Tavago.
A son of Savabeel, the Bjorn Baker-trained Gold Ambition was 11th the run before in the Rosehill Guineas but finished a closer third to Le Romain (1st) and Press Statement (2nd), who is favourite for Saturday’s $600,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at the start of March.
