Darren Weir’s in-form Melbourne visitor Tuscan Sling has opened clear favourite in 2016 RN Irwin Stakes betting for the feature race at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide this weekend.
Due to run as Morphettville Race 6 at 3:33pm (local), this year’s $120,000 Group 3 Hughes Chauffeured Limousines R N Irwin Stakes (1100m) field features an 11-starter field of The Goodwood types.
Coming up trumps with the inside run from barrier one with flying young apprentice Harry Coffey booked for the ride is one of two Weir-trained hopes in the line-up, Danehill Dancer mare Tuscan Sling.
The five-year-old has her first run in South Australia but comes off a string of good Melbourne runs including the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) win at Caulfield and her second to Azkadellia, who she beat home the run before, in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) back at the track in late February.
Azkadellia, who is Brisbane-bound targeting the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 11, franked the Mannerism form during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
She had three elite level runs finishing second in the Coolmore Classic, third in the Doncaster Mile behind the world’s best Winx before a win in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes over the Randwick mile on April 9.
This weekend Tuscan Sling is well fancied to further frank the form sitting top of the RN Irwin Stakes odds at a short $2 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
The next best in betting at $5.50 is another mare, the local Phillip Stokes-trained Northern Meteor five-year-old Runway Star.
She has had three starts at the Morphettville track for two wins, including the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) last time out on March 14.
That race has provided a host of RN Irwin Stakes winners in recent years, Runway Star looking to be the next with interstate hoop Craig Williams jumping on from a nice barrier three draw.
Weir’s other runner La Passe then occupies the third line of RN Irwin Stakes betting and rounds out the single figure hopes at $7.50.
The five-year-old mares are dominating the markets, this daughter Street Sense racing first-up from a favourable barrier two draw with Luke Currie in the saddle.
She has won six of her 14 career runs so far, including the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) last October.
La Passe hasn’t raced since Victoria Derby Day during the spring when 12th, beaten four and a half lengths by the winner Politeness in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m), so how she performs fresh will be key to her chances on Saturday.
At more generous prices but still with genuine claims of an upset RN Irwin Stakes result this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival include Stokes’ Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old Nostradamus ($11), the defending champion Daytona Grey ($14) and Manihi Classic runner-up last start I Am Gypsy ($15).
