2016 Members’ Handicap Field & Betting

One of the five Black-Type races on the BTC Cup Day card in Brisbane this Saturday is the Members’ Handicap 2016, run this year as the Singapore Turf Club Trophy.

Due to jump as Doomben Race 6 at 3:26pm (AEST), the $100,000 Listed Members’ Handicap (1600m) originally drew a final field of 15 but 14 are left after the early scratching of Le Val (14).

Leading the latest Members’ Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the in-form Robert Heathcote-trained Lordag ($4.40) in gate eight with Glen Colless to ride on the 54kg minimum.

A super-consistent five-year-old, Lordag comes off back-to-back seconds from last month including a narrow loss carrying 57kg over 1350m at the track on April 30.

His last run over a mile produced a second at the Sunshine Coast in January, which followed his second behind Centre Pivot in the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) at Doomben in December.

He should relish the step back up to 1600m which he boasts a win and four seconds from five starts and Colless has winning form on the horse over 1800m in mid-January.

The close second favourite and Members’ Handicap betting market mover at $4.60 is the rails-drawn Jumbo Prince (55.5kg) who veteran Queensland hoop Jim Byrne is booked to ride.

Prepared by Toowoomba’s Michael Nolan, the four-year-old Outback Prince stallion comes off a nice third to Coolring at the Gold Coast just last weekend in the Listed Prime Ministers Cup (1400m).

He is on the short back-up, rises a kilo and hasn’t won a race since October last year, but is tipped to appreciate the mile and will be better suited to Doomben than the GC track.

Three other runners are also at single-figures with Tony Gollan’s in-form Show A Heart gelding Heart Of A Warrior ($7.50) who hasn’t finished out of the money in his past nine starts, the 59kg top weight Rudy ($8.50) who returns to Queensland after a strong campaign in Sydney that included a third in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) and Allknight Saint ($8.50).

Along with the favourite, Brisbane’s premier trainer Heathcote is also represented in the Members’ Handicap field this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival by Bewhatyouwannabe (56kg) in gate four.

Michael Cahill retains the ride on the six-year-old who has won two of his past three starts both in Listed company including the Sunshine Coast’s Tails Stakes (1600m) on April 23 defeating Allknight Saint narrowly.

Bewhatyouwannabe was scratched from Friday’s Scone Cup field in NSW in favour of this run at home and could prove the value bet in the market at $10.
