A small field of two-year-olds take to Adelaide’s Morphettville track in the first on The Goodwood Day – the National Stakes 2016 betting tips and odds detailed below.
Set to run as Morphettville Race 1 at 12:30pm (local), this year’s $120,000 Group 3 Quayclean National Stakes (1200m) originally attracted nine juveniles.
The early scratching of Montoya’s Secret (1) leaves only eight youngsters in the mix including firming favourite I Am A Star ($3.10) who now comes into barrier one.
Steven King retains the ride on Shane Nichols’ I Am Invincible filly who broke her maiden status last start at her second career un over 1100m at Flemington ahead of her Black-Type debut in SA this weekend.
In a tight National Stakes betting market there are a further four single figure fancies including the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Fastnet Rock filly Phoenix Rising ($4) and John O’Shea’s Black-Type performed son of New Approach Dissolute ($4.40) both after their first wins.
With so many live wire hopes in the two-years-old showdown, read on for our insider selections on who to back and who to sack in the National Stakes this Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
1st
#1 Rata Tat Tat ($6)
Symon Wilde saddles-up this Host gelding from Warrnambool who comes off a win over this distance at his home track carrying 59kg from barrier 13 of 13 in the mud. Before that he was a VOBIS Gold Plate runner-up at Cranbourne, so is travelling well. A smaller field here sees him start from gate four and dropping to 57.5kg at set weights. Proven over the distance, think he could surprise.
2nd
#6 Bangs ($9)
Local Richard Jolly-trained Snippetson filly is well-bred and comes off a maiden win over 1006 at Murray Bank. That was her fifth career start and she’s up in class, but deserving of the shot. She is a Group 3 performer in Melbourne having run fifth to Concealer at Flemington last Melbourne Cup Carnival, and was far from disgraced when fifth at this track in early March’s Listed Cinderella Stakes. Looks to be travelling better and did it by over five lengths last time out suggesting she’ll enjoy the extra metres on the weekend.
3rd
#4 I Am A Star ($3.10)
Favourite has the early money coming and will take some beating after an easy win over 1100m at Flemington on May 7. Two weeks between runs looks ideal and only needs to improve slightly going up to 1200m and Black-Type company in Adelaide for this.
