Chabaud Too Good in SA Fillies Classic

Chabaud has defied a big drift in betting at Morphettville Racecourse this afternoon with an impressive performance for a dominant win in the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m).

Chabaud was confirmed to be partnered by leading Victorian hoop Dwayne Dunn in the South Australian Fillies Classic, but was charged with overcoming something of a tough draw in the awkward barrier 12.

Jumping from the gates well, Dunn was able to find passage across the field early and settled Chabaud within the sixteen horse pack as Believe, Ashlee Marie and She’s Got Speed set only a fair tempo past the post the first time.

Settling into a good rhythm in transit on the fence as Ashlee Marie took up the pace over the back straight, Dunn allowed the daughter of Lookin At Lucky ample time to balance before launching an assault in the final straight.

Steadily spooling up, Chabaud comfortably charged clear of the chasing pack and locked in a fierce sprint battle with Ashlee Marie but was far too good; pulling clear in the final 100m to post undoubtedly a career-best result to date.

Chabaud has been a strong and consistent performer for Robert Smerdon through her entire racing career since first appearing on course competitively last July; posting four wins and as many minors through thirteen starts.

Having made a successful transition to black type company with success in the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) in Launceston on February 21st, Chabaud progressed to sixth in the talent-rich Noel Rundle Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield before more-than displaying her quality with a smart performance for fifth in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on Day 2 of The Championships.

Ashlee Marie was rated a $31 chance of success in the SA Fillies Classic this afternoon, but it was undoubtedly a smart ride by in-form hoop Craig Newitt that was instrumental in her second place finish.

High Lago charged through the field alongside Beluga Blue in the final straight this afternoon, and did enough to finish a credible third.
