10 Horse 2016 Doomben 10,000 Field Released

A final field of just 10 weight-for-age hopefuls will line-up at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday in this year’s Doomben 10,000 field in Brisbane.

Due to jump as Doomben Race 7 at 4:00pm (AEST), the $750,000 Group 1 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1350m) continues the elite level action of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival before things move to Eagle Farm Racecourse Saturday week for Oaks Day.

After 14 first declarations were taken for the classic, just 10 have been paid up for at final acceptance stage including firm favourite in Doomben 10,000 betting at Ladbrokes.com.au Azkadellia.

Ciaron Maher’s four-year-old daughter of Shinko King has suffered an early blow however drawing the outside barrier 10 of 10 draw.

The last mare to win the Doomben 10,000 was Beaded (2011) followed by the filly Sea Siren (2012) the next year.

No Doomben 10,000 winner has jumped from a double-digit barrier however since Mr Innocent (12 of 15) back in 2000, 16 years ago.

Azkadellia (10) is out to become the first Doomben 10,000 winner from wider than barrier nine in 16 years

Last start she won the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on April 9 at Randwick, which followed her Coolmore Classic second and Doncaster Mile third during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

A total of four female gallopers are in the Doomben 10,000 field this year including Two Blue who jumps one inside of Azkadellia, to be ridden by Mark Zahra, in barrier nine.

Kristen Buchanan’s rising eight-year-old daughter of Dubleo lines-up for her 41st career start on the weekend and comes off a brave fourth when beaten only 1.5 lengths by the winner Malaguerra in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at the Doomben track.

The BTC Cup has produced two of the past four Doomben 10,000 winners with Sea Siren (2012) completing the double and Spirit Of Boom (2nd in 2014).

This year’s BTC Cup runner-up Dothraki is also accepted for the Doomben 10,000 by Peter & Paul Snowden, co-trainer Peter Snowden shooting for his third win in the race following the success of the aforementioned Beaded (2011) and most recently Epaulette (2013).

Mossman five-year-old Dothraki is drawn mid-field in gate five for Saturday after having the inside run in the BTC Cup only to be nosed out on the line at his second Doomben start.

His other run at the track he returns to this weekend was a third in the 2014 Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) as a three-year-old.

Team Snowden have also accepted for Charlie Boy (barrier four), the Myboycharlie gelding looking to atone for his second last (12th) in the BTC Cup.

He is tipped to appreciate the step up to 1350m for the Doomben 10,000 however as he shoots for his first win since Randwick’s Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1350m) in late February.

Following Azkadellia in Doomben 10,000 odds meanwhile are the Chris Waller-trained Delectation and Matthew Dale’s recent Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) winner at the track Fell Swoop who have come up trumps with barriers two and one respectively.

Waller shoots for back-to-back Doomben 10,000 wins having prepared last year’s champion Boban (2015), with the last winner to salute from Delectation’s barrier two draw being Spirit Of Boom (2014) just two years ago.

Sydney’s James McDonald has the mount on Waller’s four-year-old son of Shamardal replacing Jason Collett who guided Delectation, winner of Flemington’s Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) in the spring, to an eighth in the BTC Cup last time out.

Fell Swoop meanwhile has Zac Purton in the saddle on Saturday, the Not A Single Doubt four-year-old having run second in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) before his Victory Stakes win that led into a BTC Cup fifth.
