The Carlyon Stakes 2016 is one of two Black-Type features on the Moonee Valley race card on Saturday and betting tips along with the latest odd for the short-distance sprint can be found below.
Due to run as Moonee Valley Race 8 at 5:15pm (AEST), the $120,000 Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) field is down to 12 runners after a host of early scratchings.
Manihi Mischief gets the rails run gaining a start as the race’s only emergency with the withdrawal of four original acceptors: #8 Wild Rain (13), #9 Diamond Oasis (14), #10 Beau Rada (7) and #12 Sunday Escape (16).
Leading the updated Carlyon Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the classy and consistent Heatherly ($3).
The Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Lonhro mare is draw well for her first-up start at a track she has a strong record of two wins and a third from three previous runs over.
The four-year-old is also well-suited to the distance (5-2-2-1), but fitness may not be on her side as she hasn’t raced since her brave third when under a length off the winner Flamberge in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield in late February.
The other best fancied Carlyon Stakes betting tips according to the bookies are early market mover Shiraz ($4.50) for Tony McEvoy, the Lloyd Kennewell-trained four-year-old mare Viddora ($7.50) who boasts five wins from eight starts at the distance and the Lindsay Park-trained Bel Esprit four-year-old Keen Array ($8).
So can Heatherly return with a win or is there value tipping an upset Carlyon Stakes result this weekend?
1st
#1 Shiraz ($4.50)
McEvoy saddles-up this veteran seven-year-old from a gun barrier three draw with Luke Currie in the saddle first-up. The son of Zariz flies fresh boasting four wins from six resuming runs to date, but is yet to have a run at the tight Moonee Valley circuit. The alley will help him get around his first look at the track and he has the class proven by the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) in March at Rosehill. His last start on April 2 was a distant 10th when outclassed in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) won by late swooper Chautauqua. He’ll be better off the spell and has plenty of claims.
2nd
#3 Keen Array ($8)
Craig Williams is booked to ride this gelding whose last start was over 1200m at Moonee Valley when third to Stellar Collision in the autumn. He comes off a winter spell without a trial, but the 1000m first-up should suit as he has won two from four over the distance to date. Was second to Japonisme in Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the straight last Melbourne Cup Carnival and if he can produce anything similar to that is a livewire place chance even from the wide barrier.
3rd
#5 Heatherly ($3)
Deserving favourite and she could prove hard to hold out even though she’s coming off a lengthy let-up. Her form last time in was outstanding including a Group 2 win and the Group 1 placing both over 1100m at Caulfield in February. She also handles the Valley without an issue (3-2-0-1) and she won her last start here as the odds-on favourite by three lengths back in early January. If she hasn’t lost any flare over the spell, she could win.
