Snowdens Win 2016 Breeders’ Plate Again With Khan

Peter & Paul Snowden combined with jockey Blake Shinn 12 months ago to win the Breeders’ Plate with subsequent Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and were back in the Epsom Handicap Day winners’ stall again on Saturday taking out the same race with Khan.

Capitalist (2015) shone on debut in last year’s $150,000 Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m) and would go on the following autumn to win the world’s richest race for two-year-olds – the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).

Team Snowden and Shinn went back-to-back in the Breeders’ Plate this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival with the classy Khan getting the job done in fine style despite rearing in the gates pre-jump and being unloaded.

He looked calm as ever when passing the last minute check, reloaded and jumped cleanly from the inside alley.

The early speed battle saw the hot favourite Condor Heroes for trainer Gerald Ryan dig up from the wide alley and hoop Tim Clark took him to the front.

John O’Shea’s smart trial winner from September 19 at the Royal Randwick track Piracy was also up on the speed tracking second ahead of the likes of Spencer, Misty Lad and the Michael Freedman-trained Snitzel colt Bowerman.

The favourite remained up front facing the head wind and led the field around the bend into the straight.

Piracy was quickly put under pressure in the run from home, while jockey Kerrin McEvoy had Bowerman railing through up on the fence.

Khan ($5) however quickly entered the picture coming down the outside quickly to hit second at the 100m and then racing over the top of the favourite Condor Heroes ($3) for an impressive one length win.

Finishing off the Breeders’ Plate trifecta holding for third was Bowerman ($21) at the big odds.

Shinn kept Khan out of the early speed battle, giving the galloper the charmed run from barrier one and the youngster showed a terrific turn of foot in a strong late run over the ground.

While still early days, the Breeders’ Plate winner looked all class with the debut win, shaping up as a genuine 2017 Golden Slipper contender next autumn for last year’s winning colours.

“It feels very good,” Shinn said of riding back-to-back Breeders’ Plate winners for the team.

“Full credit goes to Peter and Paul Snowden…they put a whole lot of work into these babies.

“He looks another outstanding two-year-old.

“It was a big result today and to go back-to-back in these colours is very special.”
