2016 Crown Oaks Field & Barriers: Yankee Rose in 13

David Vandyke’s short-priced favourite Yankee Rose has suffered an early blow drawing out wide barrier 13 for Thursday’s Crown Oaks 2016.

After the iconic Melbourne Cup is run and won on Tuesday – view our 2016 Melbourne Cup Tips for more – the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) continues the elite level spring racing action on November 3.

The Crown Oaks field features 15 three-year-old fillies and leading the charge is Vandyke’s dual Group 1 winning daughter of All American.

Her latest turf triumph was the nice win over the boys in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) in Sydney on October 8.

The form out of that race was franked last Saturday when the third placed Prized Icon backed-up and won the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington.

Yankee Rose meanwhile was last seen running a brave third to Winx in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 22.

She rises in distance but is back against the Crown Oaks as she seeks a third elite level win.

No Crown Oaks winner has jumped from barrier 13 however since Slight Chance (1992), while the last to come off a Cox Plate run was Samantha Miss (3rd in 2008).

Also suffering wide Crown Oaks barrier draws this Melbourne Cup Carnival are the likes of Sebring Dream (14) and the John McArdle-trained last start Moonee Valley winning So You Think filly Smart As You Think (15).

Lindsay Park prepare the classy Sebring Dream whose lead-up run was a second to Tiamo Grace – a notable non-acceptor for the Crown Oaks – in last Saturday’s Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day.

The Wakeful Stakes has proven the key Crown Oaks form guide to follow into the Group 1, including producing four of the past seven winners.

The other best out of the Wakeful Stakes backing up in Thursday’s Crown Oaks 2016 field is the Robbie Laing-trained third placegetter Missrock.

She finished 2.75 lengths off the winner and chases her first win since the Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) from April 9.

Dual Crown Oaks winning jockey Hugh Bowman – Samantha Miss (2008) and Set Square (2014) – retains the ride on Missrock from a gun barrier three draw this season.

Barrier two has produced two of the past five Crown Oaks winners and belongs on Thursday to Harlow Gold, coming off a sixth in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) on Cox Plate Day.

The other most successful Crown Oaks barrier in the past 30 years is gate seven drawn this season by the Anthony Cummings-trained Lamma Hilton.

Cummings has also accepted for the better fancied Moqueen in gate five with Jason Collett to ride.

She won at Randwick in stakes company two back before a fourth when two lengths off Eleonora in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) in her maiden Melbourne run on October 15.

The Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman-trained New Zealand raider Eleonora also backs-up in the Crown Oaks rematch this week.

She chases the Ethereal Stakes – Crown Oaks double recently achieved by Set Square (2014) just two years back and jumps from barrier 10 with Damien Oliver booked for the ride.

Oliver has won four Crown Oaks including last year aboard Jameka (2015) – who lines up in the Melbourne Cup Field on Tuesday after winning the Caulfield Cup last start.
