2016 Summoned Stakes Results: Silent Sedition From Outside

The money was spot on in the last at Ladbrokes Park on Zipping Classic Day with the well-supported Silent Sedition overcoming the outside alley to take out the Summoned Stakes 2016.

Andrew Noblet’s in-form War Chant four-year-old jumped the $3.20 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au to take out the final Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival race – the mares’ only $150,000 Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m).

With Craig Williams continuing his association with the always-honest Group 1 runner-up, the mare didn’t disappoint and scored a late win powering well to the line carrying the 58kg three runs into her campaign.

After the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) second as a three-year-old in Adelaide over the winter, Silent Sedition debuted as a four-year-old at Caulfield finishing second over 1200m in Group 3 class this October.

Her lead-up run into the Summoned Stakes was another brave effort when third in Group 3 company at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

She jumped from barrier 16 of 16 in a capacity Summoned Stakes field, Williams settling her into fourth after she crossed comfortably from the wide alley to sit just off the pace set by Sweet Redemption.

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained last start Sydney winner Sweet Redemption showed the way, while Silent Sedition was stalking in third at the 1000m.

The eventual Summoned Stakes winner looked to get into a bit of sticky spot getting caught wide on the outside of the front runner in second, while the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Extensible got a nice easy run trying to work through the pack in her Melbourne debut.

Once on the straight Silent Sedition and Williams were wearing down the leader, eventually hitting the front with 1000m to go.

Silent Sedition ($3.20) responded very well and drew away to beat home Sweet Redemption ($15), who fought on nicely for second, by three quarters of a length.

Extensible ($4.50) finished off the Summoned Stakes trifecta getting up for third.

It was a lovely ride by Williams who was on the strongest mare in the race, Silent Sedition putting in a terrific effort and doing the work to post the tough win.

“She’s done a really good job,” Williams said after the victory.

“She had to carry the maximum weight and handle the wide gate.

“It is great to win the last race of the Spring Carnival in Melbourne.”

Noblet confirmed plans to bypass the Perth Summer Racing Carnival and put Silent Sedition away for the autumn where he believes she’ll come back even stronger.

“She’s had a great prep this time in,” he said.

“She got a good ride today from an awkward gate and saluted.

“We’ll give her a break now. We originally considered Perth but we won’t go there.

“We’ll save her for the autumn.

“I think she can [extend in trip]. I think in the autumn she’ll strengthen-up and mature again and we’ll stretch her out again [in distance].

“We’ll see how she comes back and place her well and she’ll be competitive wherever she goes.

“She’s a good little mare.”
