Fourteen sprinters are poised to line up at the 1200m course of Royal Randwick on Saturday, following this morning’s release of 2016 Razor Sharp Handicap nominations.
Weatherly has not been seen at the races since early March but is set to make his competitive return on Saturday, after being included in 2016 Razor Sharp Handicap nominations.
Debuting to racing for sixth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview C&G (1000m) on January 26th, Weatherly savaged the line for a maiden race win in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m), before ending his maiden campaign third in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) on March 5th.
The Beneteau colt has trialled exceedingly well in the lead-up to his competitive return and should be right in the finish of the Razor Sharp Handicap, with a light weight in tow.
Shiraz was unable to produce much in his first start for Kim Waugh a fortnight ago, but will relish the conditions of the Razor Sharp Handicap second-up.
Resuming this year for fourth in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m), Shiraz charged home to finish a close second in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), but was returned to the paddock after failing to fire and tenth in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
Unable to figure prominently in two starts for Tony McEvoy in spring, the Zariz gelding placed tenth in the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) first-up on December 3rd but is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from the run.
Waugh is set to launch a two-pronged attack in the sprint after also including His Majesty in 2016 Razor Sharp Handicap nominations.
Sprint King Joe Pride is another trainer that is set to be offered more than one shot in the Razor Sharp Handicap, after including both I Am Zelady and Kuro in nominations.
Winner of the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Quality (1300m) in early January, I Am Zelady returned in winter for fifth in the Wilson Asset Management Handicap (1100m), but was returned to the paddock after failing to fire in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m).
Having won a pair of strong Warwick Farm barrier trials through recent weeks, the I Am Invincible mare is reportedly in top condition ahead of the Razor Sharp Handicap.
Kuro has returned to racing in excellent condition this season and is primed to post a second-consecutive black type win in the Razor Sharp Handicap.
Running second in the Ranvet BM93 (1200m) on November 5th, the Denman gelding was again unlucky to finish just off the pace in the Aba Entrance Specialists BM93 (1100m) on November 19th, but responded in the best way possible with a strong win in the Starlight Stakes last time out.
A field and barrier draw for the 2016 Razor Sharp Handicap is due to be completed and released on Wednesday.
