Caulfield’s John Moloney is happy to track towards the Gold Coast’s 2017 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas with his outside hope Flying Jess.
All the pre-field money for this season’s $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m), running at the Gold Coast on January 14, is on the undefeated Bjorn Baker-trained Winning Rupert.
After posting his fourth win from as many starts last weekend in Doomben’s Listed Gold Edition Plate the classy colt firmed into clear $2.40 favouritism at Ladbrokes.com.au in early Magic Millions Guineas odds.
Moloney’s three-year-old daughter of Hinchinbrook Flying Jess meanwhile is only rated a $41 chance in those same all-in Magic Millions Gold Coast 3YO Guineas betting markets.
She has had 10 runs so far for just the one career win in Adelaide on April 30 in the Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
She has finished out of the money in her five subsequent starts and was last seen running under two lengths away fourth as a $31 outsider behind Prompt Response in the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Sandown on November 12.
“That was her first run with the blinkers and she was probably a little bit unlucky not to be right in the finish,” Moloney told Racing Victoria on Monday.
“But she’d been pleasing me all the way.
“ he wasn’t ready her first couple of runs back and then she ran well when Brenton [Avdulla] was on a wide run there at Caulfield [when sixth to Jennifer Lynn on October 15] and she didn’t run a bad race and then she was disappointed at Flemington where she didn’t quite put in well enough for that race [finishing 13th in a Listed Melbourne Cup Day race].
“She then ran well in the Twilight Glow without much luck at the finish.”
Moloney has since freshened-up his filly and plans to track towards $60,000 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales buy into the Guineas via a Canterbury run on New Year’s Eve.
“She’s a stakes winner and she’s [qualified to be] in the race so she we’ll be taking our chance,” he said.
“There are some good horses she’ll come up against but it’s a $2 million race and you’re guaranteed a start so we’re keen to give it a go.
“She’s a lovely style of horse but only cost about $60,000 out of the main sale.
“We’re happy with how she’s coming along.
“She might have a run in Sydney at Canterbury on the 31st [of December]. It’s a three-year-old race over 1200m there and so it’s a run on the way up there and it gives her a go on that leg and that gives her two weeks then until the 1400m Magic Millions race.
“Some of the better ones might test her but she deserves a chance if she’s going well.”
Flying Jess is currently sitting fourth on the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas order of entry being a Group 3 winner, despite her prize money only sitting at $89,430.
