The Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes 2017 takes place at Gosford Racecourse this afternoon and betting tips along with the latest odds on the fillies’ and mares’ feature are found below.
Due to run as Gosford Cup Day Race 4 at 3:10pm (AEDT), the field for this season’s $150,000 Gosford RSL Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) is down to a dozen runners after the early scratching of Harlem Lady (2).
Heading the updated Belle Of The Turf Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.30 and firming is the widely-drawn Imposing Lass.
Bjorn Baker’s Makfi four-year-old comes off a second over 1400m at Warwick Farm and with winning form up to 1800m will appreciate the step up to a mile today.
She is Group 2 placed and Group 1 performed, should be peaking third-up, but does need to handle a notable weight rise from just 50.5kg last start to 58kg under the handicap conditions of the Group 3 at Gosford.
In an open market her biggest dangers according the bookies include the Luke Oliver-trained Lord Stakes placegetter from Boxing Day at Caulfield Khutulun ($6.50), John O’Shea’s progressive Teofilo four-year-old Asinara ($7.50) and the Kim Waugh-trained Hetty Heights ($7.50) who has winning form at the track.
So can Imposing Lass overcome the weight and get the job done for the punters or is there value tipping an upset Belle Of The Turf Stakes result this summer?
1st
#8 Asinara ($7.50)
This Godolphin-raced mare hasn’t won since kicking off her career with back-to-back wins last summer, but think she gets every chance to break the drought here. She has a Group 3 placing behind Single Gaze and is a multiple Group 1 performer. Back right down in class this campaign and has been finishing mid-field, but not by big margins. Last time out ran fourth over the mile at Randwick on Boxing Day carting 61kg. Only 2.6 lengths off the winner and comes right back to the 54kg minimum here so will be improving. Craig Williams rides.
2nd
#11 Anisha ($16)
Nice double-figures on offer for Mark Newnham’s in-form High Chaparral five-year-old who has won two of her three starts. Placed at the Gosford track and runner-up at a mile at Randwick last time out on January 2. Drops from 59.5kg that day, when beaten just a neck, to 54kg and gets the run of the race from barrier three. Only needs to handle the step up in grade to be competitive again.

#3 Imposing Lass ($3.30)
Favourite under the big weight. She was solid on an unsuitably Soft-rated Warwick Farm track when second last time out. Was out front there, but from this gate she’ll go back and on firmer going can finish off strongly.
