The feature short-distance race taking place at the Gold Coast on Saturday is the $1 million Magic Millions Sprint 2017, betting tips and updated odds for which are found below.
The full sixteen runners will take to the Gold Coast in Race 9 at 4:40pm (AEST) to close the Magic Millions Day card in this summer’s Myer Magic Millions Sprint (1200m).
Heading the Magic Millions Sprint odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.60 is Target In Sight who gets the inside run from barrier one with Brenton Avdulla riding.
Joe Pride prepares the Nadeem seven-year-old who hasn’t raced since the winter but who has been trialling well in Sydney leading up to his return.
He has plenty of 1200m form (16-5-6-1) making him one of the genuine hopes at the distance in a field where many of his rivals are better performed at 1100m.
The veteran is also a dual placegetter from two starts at the Gold Coast track, his last run at which was a Group 3 second to Dothraki in 2015.
Dothraki is the $5 second elect in Magic Millions Sprint betting this season and even with the 58.5kg on his back, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Mossman six-year-old shapes up as a big chance.
He is undefeated at the Gold Coast having won the dual Group 3 races here.
While he hasn’t won in a long time, he’s been consistent in top grade including a The Galaxy third last March and BTC Cup second at Doomben in the winter.
So can the top two fancies run the Magic Millions Sprint quinella or can a galloper such as Barry Lockwood’s Falvelon Quality winning mare Hidden Pearl ($7) or even market mover Murt The Flirt ($15) score an upset?
1st
#10 Le Cordon Bleu ($8)
Like the odds on offer for this in-form Team Hawkes-trained Snitzel six-year-old who won first-up on December 31 in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m). Same distance here and he’s got the record over the metres (7-3-0-2). Needs to handle the rise to 57kg, but is drawn a treat in gate two and finished third in this race (over 1100m) last Magic Millions Day. Isn’t all that consistent, but if the speed is on happy to tip him to keep the winning streak going.
2nd
#2 Dothraki ($5)
Dothraki is a Group 1 placegetter with enough class to beat this open field. Hasn’t raced since Derby Day when beaten under three lengths in a Group 2 down the Flemington straight. Trialled well twice in Sydney since including a Rosehill win over Testashadow by over six lengths on December 30. Should be flying fresh over this distance (16-3-4-5) and is undefeated at the Gold Coast course. Has been a year between wins, but this is a very winnable race for him.
3rd
#8 Straturbo ($26)
Big value for a place could be in Straturbo in gate three and coming off a 1050m Bribie Handicap win in Brisbane. No doubt the 1100m is this Stratum seven-year-old’s pet distance, and 1200m is a stretch, but he’s a dual placegetter over the metres and won a Rosehill trial by over four lengths late last month. Flying at the moment, gets the run of the race and ran finish off.
