Trainer Darren Weir has a particularly impressive record at the Magic Millions and Stratum Star appeared to have the class edge over a smart Magic Millions Trophy field.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Damien Lane allowed the Stratum entire to stride forward and take an ideal position on the heels of early leaders Show Command and Payroll.

Stratum Star immediately showed his quality by switching off and receiving an ideal run in transit alongside Col ‘N’ Lil; stalking the leaders rounding onto the final straight.

Offered a clear racing line with 300m to travel, Stratum Star kicked clear of his rivals and only continued to find; savaging the line to beat a gallant Feltre by half a length; Payroll running on well for third.

Darren Weir was wary of Stratum Star’s handicap and wide drawn in the Magic Millions Trophy and was pleased to see the horse’s class shine through this afternoon.

“He got the right ride to overcome both weight and a wide draw,” Weir said after the race.

“I said to Damien if at some stage you could get off the fence then that would be good, and at this corner the horse actually moved out a bit without Damien doing it and got into the right lane.

“He switched off nicely down the back. When he got to the outside at the top of the straight I knew he’d tough it out, because the boys down at Warrnambool do a great job and this horse is in great shape.

“Since Perth he’s done a lot of work, he’s had three trials in a week there not long ago to get him right up to the mark.

“He’s such a tough horse. Really had him in the right shape to be able to run today.”

Stratum Star broke through for a maiden win at the highest level in the 2015 edition of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and claimed a second with a strong performance over talented company in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in Perth, just over one month ago.

Jockey aboard the second-placed Feltre Michael Hellyer launched a protest after the race, claiming that Stratum Star shifted inwards at the top of the straight, however the protest was dismissed.
