Tasmanian Derby 2017 Field & Barrier Draw Released

The official 2017 Tasmanian Derby field and barrier draw for Friday afternoon’s feature at Hobart Racecourse are now out with the Hobart Guineas winner Northwest Passage the headline final acceptor.

Set to run a Hobart Race 6 at 5:22pm (AEDT) as part of the Bow Mistress Day action, this year’s $100,000 Listed Schweppes Tasmanian Derby (2200m) has attracted nine three-year-olds.

Heading the Tasmanian Derby field with Adam Hyeronimus to ride from barrier five is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Sydney raider Northwest Passage.

The ultra-consistent son of So You Think posted his third win from four career starts last time out when travelling to Tasmania for a barnstorming 7.5 length victory in the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m).

That effortless performance will see Northwest Passage jump odds-on favourite in Tasmanian Derby betting on Friday at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Third in the Hobart Guineas from January 22 and looking to close the gap between he and the champion Northwest Passage is the locally-trained and rails-drawn Trusted Warrior from Campania.

Prepared by Chris Cook & Imogen Miller the Trusting gelding travels to the Hobart track for a seventh time on Saturday, but has just the one third place effort from the Guineas at the course.

Also representing the local Tasmanian hopes in the Derby this weekend are Tough Vic for Charlie Goggin & Luela Meaburn and the John Blacker-trained Biscay Barb.

Tough Speed gelding Tough Vic comes off a sixth in the Hobart Guineas beaten over 11 lengths, while Magnus three-year-old Biscay Barb ran fourth in the same traditional lead-up.

The Hobart Guineas run was Biscay Barb’s first at the course and his Longford-based trainer Blacker will be hoping for an improved run at his second start there on Friday afternoon.

The outside barrier (9) belongs on Friday to the visiting Mick Price-trained Dalghar gelding Shadow Prince from Melbourne.

The galloper has won only one of his 10 career starts to date when saluting over 2025m at Cranbourne on December 23 by nearly four lengths.

He then travelled to the Apple Isle for a Hobart Guineas run, but only managed to finish fifth over 10 lengths off Northwest Passage.

Also out of the Hobart Guineas and likely running for second at best on Friday in the rematch behind Northwest Passage is the Mark Webb-trained Autmed from Cranbourne.

The Authorized gelding came off a January 12 win over 1700m by 5.4 lengths in much easier company at Penola before his Hobart Guineas seventh a fortnight back.
