A line-up of some of the season’s best fillies will take to the Flemington track in the 2017 The Vanity on Saturday, betting tips and the latest odds on the Black Caviar Lightning Day feature found below.
Nine fillies remain in contention for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) after the scratching of #7 Ceylon (8).
Leading the updated The Vanity betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at $2.90 and firming is last start Manfred Stakes winner over the boys Legless Veuve.
Mark Zahra retains the ride on the classy Stuart Webb-trained daughter of Pins who flew fresh and now looks for her first win at Flemington, returning to the track for the first time since her seventh on debut in the Listed Festival Stakes (1000m) in March of 2016.
The bookies also rate the chances of Harlow Gold first-up, the Lindsay Park-trained Tavistock filly firming right in from $6 to $3.90- in The Vanity odds.
Saturday marks her first run since the second to Lasqueti Spirit in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) and while there’s no doubt she’ll be better over further, in a small field class alone presents her as a danger.
So will the top two in betting run The Vanity quinella this weekend or does the value lie further down the markets in the likes of Extra Olives ($5.50) shooting for three wins on the trot or Nurse Kitchen ($6.50) last seen winning October’s Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m)?
1st
#3 Harlow Gold ($3.90)
Happy to follow the money trail on this market mover who’ll need a touch of luck and cover from the barrier, but who shapes-up as a class hope at good odds. Crown Oaks second at the track last November and 1400m first-up should suit. She has won her only other start over the distance and impressed in a lead-up jump-out looking fit and ready to go.
2nd
#1 Legless Veuve ($2.90)
Deserving favourite after the good Manfred Stakes win over 1200m. Has winning Group 2 form over these metres, but how she goes at Flemington will be key to her chances of securing back-to-back wins. Zahra knows the filly well and if she improves from her impressive retuning run, she’ll be the fit filly to run down again.
3rd
#2 Nurse Kitchen ($6.50)
Lightly-raced Savabeel filly prepared by David Brideoake who took out a Group 2 mile at Moonee Valley last time out. That was her first stakes run and her second win in three starts. Haven’t seen much of her during the break, but is the unknown here with the Bowman factor.
