Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes 2017 Barriers: Favourites Draw Wide

The Lindsay Park-trained favourite Catchy has suffered an early blow for Saturday’s Group 1 major at Caulfield Racecourse coming up with gate 13 in the official 2017 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes barrier draw.

The final field of two-year-olds for the $1.5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) was announced on Tuesday morning followed by the barrier draw for the 16 confirmed starters and sole emergency.

Leading the pre-barrier Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $5, the undefeated Fastnet Rock filly Catchy coming off a win in the Prelude has work to do on Saturday from her wide alley.

If the emergency Sheer Madness (7) fails to gain a run, Catchy will come into barrier 12 of 16 in the Blue Diamond Stakes field – a gate that last produced a winner with Alinghi back in 2004.

Co-trainer David Hayes has a total of six Blue Diamond Stakes hopes as he chases a sixth win in the two-year-olds’ classic and all but Tulip (8) drew double-digit barriers.

The stable’s other widely-drawn hopes are: Wait For No One (10), Muraahib (15), Will’s Bid (16) and Formality (12).

Last year the Mick Price-trained Extreme Choice won the Blue Diamond Stakes from barrier 11 (of 16), the alley drawn this year by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Canonbury Stakes winner Pariah.

Barrier 11 will belong to Formality, another undefeated Fastnet Rock filly for Lindsay Park, if the emergency comes out as she looks to go back-to-back at the track after the solid Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) victory on February 4.

Price’s chance at back-to-back Blue Diamond Stakes wins meanwhile is Cao Cao who was one of the big winners barrier-wide drawn in gate two.

The most successful Blue Diamond Stakes barrier in the past 30 plus years with five winners (since 1983) is gate four drawn on Saturday by the Ciaron Maher-trained Jukebox.

Barrier 4 (five winners) is the most successful Blue Diamond Stakes gate (since 1983) and belongs this year to Jukebox

To be ridden by Luke Nolen, who won aboard Reward For Effort in 2009, Jukebox is a son of Snitzel who has won both career starts to date.

He was last seen running away to take out the Restricted Listed Inglis 2YO Premier (1200m) over the Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes track and distance by two lengths in early February.

Barrier five is the next best looking over the Blue Diamond Stakes history with four winners in that time, the alley belonging this autumn to the Tony McEvoy-trained filly Roomooz.

Coming off a fourth to Catchy in the Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude, Roomooz is also a daughter of Fastnet Rock and has four-time winning hoop Dwayne Dunn aboard on Saturday.

Barrier one belongs to Tony McEvoy’s well-tried Snitzel colt Azazel, while the outside draw belongs to the Clinton McDonald-trained daughter of Snitzel Spoils out to be the first Blue Diamond Stakes winner from barrier 16 in over 30 years.
