Tough galloper Stratum Star will now head towards the 2017 Australian Cup after scoring a hat trick of wins with his victory in the Group 2 $200,000 Crown Lager Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield today.

The Darren Weir trained Stratum Star travelled to Perth over the summer to win the Group 1 $1m Peters Investments-Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot on December 3 and then headed to the Gold Coast in Queensland to win the $1m Moet & Chandon Magic Millions Trophy (2200m) on January 14.
Mark Zahra took over the reins in Stratum Star ($6) from Damian Lane who had been aboard at his last two starts and rode a well-judged race to be able to beat his stablemate Humidor ($5) with Lane in the saddle in the run to the line.
Weir will target the Group 1 $1.5m Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 11 and hinted that the Stratum stallion will probably being standing at stud in the Spring.
“We planned to run today and then onto the Australian Cup,” Weir said.
“He has to be a live chance in that the way he ran today.”
“You have to be a tough a horse to be able to that. He is really the perfect horse.”
