There are nineteen remaining stayers in this season’s $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m), the handicap clash set to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:47pm (AEDT).

Despite the poor recent record of favourites in the race, money has been steady for the top fancy in Adelaide Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au Master Of Arts ($4.80).

The Darren Weir-trained galloper comes off a win in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) giving him a perfect two-from-two record at the Morphettville track.

The Lord Reims Stakes has produced three Adelaide Cup winners in the past decade, most recently Rialya (2nd in 2012).

The biggest danger to Master Of Arts in the Adelaide Cup odds is the 58kg top weight Chance To Dance ($6) looking to salute carrying the most weight of any runner for the first time since Capecover (57kg in 2010).

The Robert Hickmott-trained Chance To Chance comes off a Torney Cup second at Moonee Valley and in the past decade five Adelaide Cup winners had their final lead-up in Melbourne.

Annus Mirabilis ($7.50) is the next best fancied, Stuart Webb’s six-year-old proven up to 2800m and last seen running fifth in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m).

That Flemington race, run this autumn on March 4, has produced two Adelaide Cup winners in the past six years most recently Outback Joe (3rd in 2014).

Rounding out the single-figure fancies in Adelaide Cup betting 2017 is Roy Higgins fourth placegetter De Little Engine ($8).

Earlier we published our comprehensive 2017 Adelaide Cup Form Guide & Betting Preview, and based on the facts and status uncovered there we have our inside tips on the race below.

Our 2017 Adelaide Cup Trifecta Tip is #17 Honey Steel’s Gold from #2 Master Of Arts and #5 Jim’s Journey

1st

#17 Honey Steel’s Gold ($26)

Upsets are not uncommon in the Adelaide Cup and going one again in 2017 with this over-priced Lindsay Park-trained jumper. The stable won with $31 roughie Purple Smile (2016) last autumn and this Keep The Faith six-year-old has definite claims at big odds. Last seen winning the Marong Cup at Bendigo and has trialled well since in a Steeple hit-out at Ballarat. Plenty of Adelaide form including a gun Morphettville record (4-2-0-1). Well-proven at the two miles (5-2-1-1) because of the hurdle form so has the staying power to outlast a pretty mediocre edition of this Group 2. Drawn a treat in barrier four and also well-weighted on the 55.5kg minimum (weights raised 2.5kg).

2nd

#2 Master Of Arts ($4.80)

Based on the good lead-up win in the Lord Reims, this Weir-trained stayer is deserving favourite and will take some beating. Only carries one kilo more than his rivals (56.5kg) and had that on his back for the Group 3 here last time out. Undefeated at Morphettville (2-2-0-0) and Damian Lane comes aboard for the ride. Ace barrier (6) and has the highest Win Rate (35%) of the field.

3rd

#5 Jim’s Journey ($12)

If the Lord Reims form stacks-up then this local Peter Blanch-trained, Dom Tourneur-ridden Good Journey five-year-old has top three claims in the Adelaide Cup trifecta. He is the definite track specialist (17-5-1-3) out of the bunch and has won up to 2600m. Under a length beaten by Master Of Arts carrying equal weight last time out and gets a kilo less for this.
